Mrs. Harris was one of those who poured, and Mrs. Webster spoke concerning her travels abroad and brought an exhibit of saris and other articles from India. Support of CARE is one of the main projects of the General Federa tion of Women's clubs, of which the local club is an affiliate. Applied Nutrition Class Scheduled by Food Expert The Health and Welfare department of the Mcriford Seventh-day church will spun wr a class in applied nutrition December 4 through (1 at 1300 Greenwood avenue, Medford. The instructor will be Miss M. Dorothea Jones, nutritionist for the International Nutri tion Research foundation at Arlington, Calif. Miss Jones is associate edit or of Today's Food, a quar terly magazine devoted to bet ter nutrition. She travels ex tensively and has held classes in Chicago, New York, Wash ington, D.C., and most of the other large centers in this country. While traveling she visits the outstanding re search centers and will bring lo the class the latest research material as well as the most modern methods of food prep aration. She has Just returned from a six weeks' tour of Europe studying their nutri tional habits. The modern concept of food often is that it should look Rood, taste good, and he easy to fix without much thought ns to whether it will satisfy the requirements of good nu trition. Dorothea Jones Classes will meet from 0:45 to 11:45 a.m., Tuesday and Wednesday, December 4 and December 5, and 7 In f) p.m., Tuesday and Thursday, De cember 4 and 8. The daytime classes will be (he same as the evening ones so one can choose which he would like to attend. They will he held in the church basement. Men ns well as women are Invited, and young people as well ns juniors are especially invited to attend. The class is free. Samples will he served, recipes will be furnished and prizes will he given away each evening. Members of Travel Study club, of the Oregon Federa lion of Women's clubs, were hostesses for the club's annual CARE tea, held Tuesday af ternoon at the Girls Commun ity club. Mrs. Edward C. Root was chairman of the lea, and Mrs. Clay M. Lee, stale chairman of projects, was program chairman. Mrs. Elizabeth Settle and Mrs. Erwin C. Hoffman greet ed guests. Through CARE, the Gen eral Federation of Women's clubs, at local, stale, nation al and international levels, will provide educational ma terial to be used in conjunc tion with adult literacy and primary educational pro grams, under the direction of trained teachers and technicians. Mrs. Joseph Webster, and Mrs. Hoffman were guest speakers for the afternoon. Travels Recalled Mrs. Webster has travelled around the world and visited friends in India. She said that the poor receive help through CARE and the United churches. The children are thin, and often naked, but they seemed very good, she stales. According to Mrs. Web ster, 8,0(10 children a year are killed by leopards and tigers. Mrs. Webster demonstrated to the group how lo put on a saris and the different ways to drape it. They are made of fine silk, will not wrinkle, and one may be purchased for $3. Many other items of the handiwork of India were shown. Mrs. Hoffman was born in Germany, has travelled to many countries in the world, and has lived in the Orient. She spoke mostly of Hong Kong. She told of the holes made in the mountain sides where people live and that in areas where housing projects have been erected, but not enough for everyone, squat ters build shacks on lop of these projects. She stated thai these peo ple need CARE and need it fast, adding that through this literacy program, which leaches them to read and write, they will he able to live a better life. Mrs. Lee spoke briefly reading a letter from Mrs. Dexter Otis Arnold, explain ing the General Federation of Women's clubs-CAHE lit eracy program, and a letter from Mrs. Leo F. Curtis, Gen eral Federation of Women's clubs projects chairman, tell ing of her visit to Hong Kong and the Philippines, seeing CARE at work. The tea table was centered with a "Count Your Bless ings" cake, with yellow can dles in silver candie holders on either side. As the candles were lighted, the Rev. Kath arine Bosworth, minister of Unity church, gave a bless ing for CARE, and the Gen eral Federation of Women's clubs. Mrs. Carl W. Peterson, president of the club, cut and served the cake. During the afternoon, Mrs. Fred Kon schot from Purucker's Piano house, played the organ. CARE Boxes Mrs. John L. Mansfield was chairman of the CARE boxes, which were placed in the Mcdford branches of the United States National bank and the First National bank of Oregon for the remainder of the week. Preceding the tea, a brief business session vas conduct ed by t lie president. Plans for a Christmas party for the Mcdford Convalescence home were made. This is the club's community improvement pro gram. A Thanksgiving party was given the members at the home, on Wednesday, No vember 21. Mrs. Walter J. Hess became member of the club. Guests for the business meeting were Mrs. Paul J. Dix, Medford; Mrs. N. Schoe- ncman, Gold Hill; Mrs. Ger ald Elliott, and Mrs. Robert Spayde, Ashland. Due to Christmas falling on the next club day, the Decem ber mecing will be held Tues day, December 18, at the Girls Community club. Conduct Ceremonies Formal initiation ceremo nies were conducted by Omi- cron lheta Rho Girls club at the Odd Fellows hall, Novem ber 2(i. Those who received the initiatory degree were the Misses Rrenda Sparling, Hol ly Hove, . Melody Swagcrty, and Joctte Bowden. The president, Miss Dianna Vinzant explained the various procedures involved in Theta Rho work and the vice presi dent pro teni, Miss Barbara Beer gave the obligation. Club officers who assisted were the past president, Miss Eddie Appelgalc; sec retary, Miss Cheryl Walker; treasurer. Miss Jane Miller, warden, Miss Suzanne While and conductor. Miss Suzanne Massong. Other officers were the chaplain pro tern, Miss Vicki Breen, and guardian pro lem. Miss Knthy Appel gale who also served as an angel. During the meeting two "grandmothers" were adopt ed by the members. They are Mrs. May Stuart and 'Mrs. Phoebe Vaughn, who are in area convalescent homes, and are Rebekah lodge members. Wilder term officers elect ed are president, Miss Bar bara Heer; vice president, Miss Suzanne White: secre tary, Miss Cheryl Walker, and treasurer, Miss Jane Mil ler. Advisors will be Mrs. Homer Vinzant with Mrs. Klkon Walker and Mrs. Henry Guss as assistants. Installation ceremonies will be held the latter part of January. Mrs. Helen Whccicr, Dis trict representative of the Joint Youth committee and her daughter. Kay. paid an official visit lo the lodge. Rebekah visitors from the Medford branch were Miss Caroline Leaders, who pre sided at the piano; Mrs. Riley Appelgalc, nasi president of the Rebekah Assembly of Ore gon; Mrs, Klbert MeNew: Mrs. I l.crnv (-line: and Mrs. Alice Smith. Federated clubs throughout the United Stales join in the CARE project every year.
