Other direc tors include Jesse Himmcls- bach of Baker county and Avery Thompson of Douglas county. Neuberger Backs Rights of Consumer Corvallls - IUPD - Sen. Mau rine Neuberger (D-Ore.) call. ed Saturday for an end to hidden credit charges, con cealing packaging of goods, and drug monopolies. She said these represented abuses of the consumer, "the only Important group in the economy who are not effec tively organized." "Hidden high finance charges on easy credit spell trouble for millions of Ameri can families buying on time with installment payments," she said. "Just as consumers have the right to know what Is In their credit contract," Mrs. Neuberger said, "so also they have the right to know what Is In the package they buy." She said often purchasers are unable to tell from a package the amount or content of the product. The Oregon Democrat said drug patent monopolies let the drug Industry "charge high prices and take enor mous profits from a captive consumer public." She spoke to the Corvallls branch of the American Association of University Women. (UPI) Jeannace Freeman Returns to Prison; Execution Date Set Barton Favors Cigarette Tax, Broad Tax Base Salem - AM - State Rep. Clarence Barton (D-Coquillc), speaker - designate of the House, told United Press In ternational Saturday he fa vored a tax on cigarettes and a broadening of the income tax base. Both were recommended Suturday by Gov. Mark Hat field when he revealed his $405.3 million budget request for the 1963-65 biennium. Barton said "I was chair man of the Interim Tax com m i 1 1 e e that recommended these very things to the 1861 Legislative assembly. "As to the amount, I've no quarrel with the four cent cigarette tax I've repeated ly urged it. I think Oregon can no longer afford to be the only state out of 50 that has no tax on tobacco. "However, I'll reserve com ment on the income tax until I have a chance to review the budget. The philosophy of a net receipts tax was approved by a tax committee of which I was chairman. I want to study the amount to be raised. "I'm glad the governor rec ognizes the validity of our in terim tax committee. I hope j the legislature will do like wise," Barton said. !. Salem - (UPII - Twenty-one- year-old child slayer Jean nace June Freeman returned to the slate prison here about 3:25 p.m. Friday. Warden Clarence T. Glad den said that nothing hap pened during the return trip from Madias where her exe cution date was reset for Jan. 29. During the return she pass ed by the canyon over which she is convicted of throwing Larry Jackson, 6. "She made no comment as she passed the spot." Glad den said. He added Miss Free man has "been by the area several times since her arrest, and has made no special com ment on any of these times. She was returned to her detention cell in the women's prison here, the warden said. Ecumenical Council Takes Unity Steps Vatican City -HIPP- The Ecumenical Council Saturday voted overwhelmingly to ap prove a draft calling for "theological, liturgical. Juri dical, psychological and prac tical" steps to narrow the gap between Roman Catholicism and tile Eastern churches. The important vote was the council's first concrete action towards Pope John XXIII's lnng-range goal - unification of all the Christian churches. Earlier in the day's session, the applauding council fathers were informed that the Pope, suffering from gastric trou ble and anemia, had shown a "good improvement" and hoped to give his rtrular Sun day blessing from the win- down of his study. Williams Jr. iD N.J.I said Saturday his com mittee will tour the neigh borhoods of Portland In a new effort to hear from the elder ly in hearing there Monday. Williams heads the Sub committee on Involuntary Re location of the Elderly. It Is trying to find out, through a series of hearings in the na tion, the effects on older peo ple when they are moved from their homes by highway construction, urban renewal and other public programs. If sent to the gas chamber, Miss Freeman would become the first woman executed in Oregon history. Her original Dec. 6 execu tion dale was postponed to allow her attorneys time for an appeal to the U. S. Su preme Court. The council voted 2,u68 for 36 against with eight void ballots, to approve a draft on church unity submitted by the preparatory commission on the Eastern church under pa pal secretary of stale Amleto Cardinal Cicognanl. It ruled, however, that the draft should later becombincd with two other documents on the same general subject. Cicognaiii's draft dealt only with relations with the Ortho dox and other Eastern church- , es, which broke with Rome In 1054 A D. The oilier two documents deal with (he problem ot Christian unity as a whole,! including the Protestants. I Newsmen Treated Alter Budget Meet Salem -HPIu Th "human lement" was not overlook ed Saturday when Gov. Mark Hatfield unveiled his proposed S405.3 million general fund budget. The budget was announc ed at 8 a.m. Many of the newsmen present drove here from Portland and other cities. When lhey arrived at the Capitol, they kiddingly ask ed, "Where's the coffee?" When the conference end ed, newsmen discovered a member of the governor's i!?ff had dashed out and spent about $1 fcr coffee and rolls for the working press. New Land Promotion Regulations Urged Portland - (UPII - Oregon Real Estate Commissioner Robert Jensen said here Fri day Oregon needs new laws to curb deceiving land pro motion and sales. Jensen spoke to some 150 realtors. j The commissioner said there have been an increased number of "questionable" land deals in Orcson during the past year or two. He said regulatory laws are needed to assure honest advertising and sales. He said the Real Estate Commission is drafting a subdivision law. Jensen told the realtors lhey should do what they can j lo stop fraudulent promotion, j He said a deceiving land! scheme casts aspersion on the entire profession. i Welfare Probe Asked in Malheur Pendleton - IUPD - The Ore gon Welfare Commission Fri day was asked to provide an investigator to look into fraudulent welfare claims in Malheur County. The request was made at the commission's monthly meeting here. Umatilla Coun ty asked the commission to provide its funds for an investigation of fraudulent claims. The county has been conducting the investigation. Also at the meeting, com plaints concerning the salaries of welfare workers were . aired. Trocfc Tips Over in Highway 62 Accident Stale police reported a one vehicle accident Friday on Highway 62 three miles from Medford. No Injuries were re ported. David Wesley Moore, 24. of 712 Crater Lake ave., Med ford, was driving the truck owned by Farmers Packing company south on the high way when it went onto the shoulder. He attempted to got it bark on the highway, but it turned over, police said.
