SOC-Whitworth Grid Tussle Thanksgiving Day Reminder Of Old Pear Bowl Rivalry One of the small college thlctic powers ol the Pacific Northwest will provide the opposition for Southern Ore gon in its season football fi nale on Thursday, Nov. 22, Thanksgiving day. In action reminiscent of the old Pear Bowl days, the Red Raiders of the Rogue will en counter the Whitworth college Pirates of Spokane, Wash. The contest will be at noon at the Crater high stadium at Central Point. No official honors are at stake but there will be a mat ter of prestige. For, it will be a game of champions from two of the northwest's three small college leagues. South ern Oregon holds the Oregon Collegiate conference laurels and Whitworth is the Ever green conference champ. Whitworth has gained na tional attention for its athletic prowess. The game, therefore, will be a good test of the met tle of the Raiders of the Rogue. Six-Game String The Pirates will come to Central Point riding on a six game victory string. They lost their first two games of the season but since have been unmarred. Whitworth fell 48 to 7 to strong Fresno State in its opener. It then bowed 7 to 0 to University of Puget Sound but later bounced UPS 27 to 6. Other triumphs have been over Eastern Washing ton twice. Western Washing outhern Texas, Oklahoma in By GARY KALE UPI Sports Writer The college football bowl picture firmed up a bit Satur day with Southern California, Mississippi, Texas and Okla homa remaining in the fore front for the choice placings. Second - ranked Alabama suffered the shock of the day when Georgia Tech halted the Crimson Tide's 19-game win ning streak, 7-6, and tumbled the Alabamans out of a tie for the Southeast conference lead. Southern California made llm this season, 13-6, as the time this season, 13-6, as the top-ranked Trojans maintain ed a true course for the Rose Bowl and their first perfect campaign since 1932. Southern Oregon also lost Its first two games to Chico Slate and Lewis and Clark and has been unbeaten since. The Raiders also have a six game string after whipping Weber yesterday 26 to 3. NAIA Semifinalilt In 1960 Whitworth was a semifinalist for the NAIA Hol iday Bowl bid, fell to Hum boldt State 13 to 7. Last year the Whits avenged their Log ger loss 10 to 0. In 1961 Whit worth was ranked fourth na tionally by the Associated Press small college poll. Unit ed Press International gave the Whits 15th rating. Pirate athletes also have done well in other sports. Last spring Whitworth graduated 13 gridders, nine of them four-year varsity per formers. So, this has been a rebuilding season. But, Coach Sam Adams had 16 lettermen return. Among them were 13 linemen to give the Pirates strength in their forward wall. Among the returnees is John (Hula) Murio, the na tion's leading scorer last year, shifted from the backfield to end this season. The Southern Oregon roster is made up largely of south western Oregon and Willam ette valley athletes with a seasoning of some fine north ern California talent and sev Cal, Mississippi, The No. 3 Mississippi Reb els defeated a tough Tennes see team, 19-6, for the S E.C. lead and the inside track for Sugar Bowl play; Texas, rated fifth, shut out Texas Chris tian, 14-0, to strengthen its hopes for a trip to the cotton bowl, as the Southwest Con ference representative, and Oklahoma knocked off previ ously unbeaten and sixth ranked Missouri, 14-0, in a Big Eight tilt to gain the upper hand for Orange Bowl compe tition. Southern Cal swarmed past Navy with three "B's." Hal bedsole caught a seven-yard pass from Pete Bcathard for one touchdown and Willie Brown scampered 56 yeards for the other score. A 100-yard scoring run with a pass interception by wing- back Louis Guy in the third period broke the back of Ten i nessce's upset chances. Guy , also score d Mississippi's first touchdown in the opening pe riod on a four-yard pass from Glynn Griffing. Ray Poage scored twice from inside the 10-yard line for Texas against a stubborn T.C.U. line. A tie or victory over Texas A&M in Thurs day's nationally televised game will give Texas the Southwest conference title. Oklahoma tallied at the start of each half and held Missouri's best-in-the nation rushing attack to gain undis puted possession of the Big Eight lead. Mrukowski did x magnifi cent job guiding the sledge hammer offense and slipped across two touchdowns him self against the Webfoots who went into the game with high hopes of a victory and an in vitation to a post-season game. A crowd of 72.828, smallest in the Ohio stadium since the opener of the 1953 season watched the Buckeyes turn a complete reversal of form af ter losing to Iowa and barely edging Indiana a week ago as their powerful fullback at tack dominated the game on the gray and misty day.
