Under the pro gram, fraternities would be prohibited immediately from taking in new members and would die out when present members are graduated. Washington - The Pentagon, warning personnel of Rus sian espionage: "It must constantly be remembered that Soviet bloc intel ligence and security services carry their espionage activities to fantastic lengths." Houston Dr. Eugene M. Shoemaker, an astrogcologist, predicting that a mile-wide meteor will hit the earth: "Such a meteorite impact in North America is long overdue." 625 Stevens Street Medford Phone 773-7711 Network Refuses To Cancel Pact Over Hiss Show New York - (UPI) - Schick Safety Razor Co., which has a $1 million sponsorship con tract with the American Broadcasting Co., tried, but failed, Wednesday to cancel the pact because of the show ing of the controversial tele vision program on the career of Richard M. Nixon. The appearance of convict ed perjurer Alger Hiss, who commented on Nixon's role in the Hiss investigation, raised protests across the nation fol lowing the program Thursday. Patrick Frawley, Schick board chairman and chief executive officer, telegraphed ABC criticizing what he call ow "(ho pytrpmp nonr taste and judgment shown by the ABC network in presenting a convicted perjurer ... as a critic of a former vice presi dent of the United States." Partial Sponsorship Frawley asked that "You agree to . . , cancellation . . . by us" of a sponsorship con tract for 1963. ABC said Schick's contract is for about $1 million for partial sponsor ship of the shows "Combat" and "Stony Burke" beginning in January. Vincent A. Francis, ABC-TV vice president in charge of sales for the western division, replied to Frawley. "We value our relationship with you and your company, and, of course, we regret that you feel as strongly as you do about that broadcast. How ever, we cannot grant your request." Gas Firm Pays Property Taxes Portland - (UPI) - Northwest Natural Gas Co. officials vis ited sheriff's offices in 11 counties Wednesday and to day, but it was a mutually friendly occasion. The firm paid property taxes aggregating $1,393,915. Amounts included, by coun ty: Multnomah $924,621; Washington $124,090; Clacka mas $99,451; Marion $71,913; Lane $61,984; Linn $44,452; Benton $31,664; Polk, $14, 423; Wasco $7,808; Columbia $7,538; Yamhill $5,966. OSU President Elected To College Association Washington -ll'PN- President James H. Jensen of Oregon State University was one of six college presidents elected to the board of directors of the Association of State Uni versities and Land Grant Col leges Wednesday. The association concluded its 75th annual convention here. President Novice G. Faw cett of Ohio State University was elected president of the organization. a contract had been signed Wednesday for the delivery to India of Soviet-made equip ment for gas and oil explor ation and research. The agency also announced that Russia has permitted In dia to open a consulate in Odessa because of growing trade, business and cultural relations between the two countries. Turkey is the only other non - Communist nation to maintain a consulate in the Soviet Union. It is located at Batumi on the Black Sea. Earlier this week Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru disclosed that the Russians had given assurances they would carry out agreements to supply India with MIG jet fighters and a plant to make them. Nehru told parliament Wednesday that the Soviet at titude has been "consistently friendly. ' "They have been put in a difficult position because they are an ally of Red China," Nehru said. "We don't expect them to break that alliance. But we have their good wishes, even recently, and that is a consolation to us." Although the Soviet aid commitments to India were made before the border war broke out, it was considered significant that the Russians are going through with them. Accidental Gunshot Fatal To Indian The Dalles (UPII Wilbur Harry Queahpama, 32, a Warm Springs Indian, was killed Tuesday when he was accidentally shot in the chest while hunting on the Warm Springs Reservation. Deputy Sheriff Del Goss said Jerry Scott, 31, a Navajo Indian, told authorities he fired twice with a rifle at what he thought was a deer about 200 yards away. The men were hunting on horse back in the Quartz Creek can yon area near Simnasho. A complaint was filed be fore the U. S. commissioner in Portland charging Scott with involuntary manslaugh ter. It was Wasco county's first gunshot death of the hunting season and the seventh in the state since late September. Benton Jury Indicts Man on Murder Charge Corvallis -CTli- A Benton county grand jury Wednesday indicted Henry H. Mazingo, 39, Greenberry, on a charge of first degree murder. Mazin go is accused of the Oct. 21 shotgun slaying of his es tranged wife. Ethel Mae, 25. Mrs. Mazingo was slain at her three-room house.
