Sadly, I have to say, no, I know of no complete cure, and I do not expect soon to see one. Why? Because in so many ways the inherited con ditions are like the mutations which show up at intervals in many forms of life. In such conditions, the person is born without a needed chemical or with a poorly constructed organ like a pancreas or kid ney. Unfortunately, we doc tors cannot hope to rebuild a defective organ. To show what I mean: Charles Darwin once told about a farmer who went out one morning and found that a ewe in his flock had given birth to some strange-looking Iambs that had little short legs, like those of a dachshund. Quotes From the News BY UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL Miami Chief hurricane forecaster Gordon Dunn, pre dicting the continuation of this year's calm hurricane season: "This year probably is lhe start of a drop in hurricane frequency, and it could last 20 years." Buenos Aires Sam Snead, explaining why he missed winning the individual title during the course of the Canada Cup golf matches: "You just have to admit it at .. you start coming apart at the seams," Washington Deputy Defense Secretary Roswell L. Gilpatric, stating the U.S. position on the Ilyushin bombers presently on Cuban soil: "We hold the Soviets responsible for the types of mili tary equipment which it has furnished to Castro, and as of lhe present time we regard removal of those bombers as within the capacity of the Soviets to bring about." Hollywood Former top screen star Gene Tiemey, now married to Howard Lee of Houston, Tex.: "I started my career so young and worked so hard for the first 10 years I had little time for friends. Now I have discovered how rewarding it is to have friendship." Try and Stop Me By BENNETT CERF THEY'RE MAKING a movie of Charles Finney's fascinat ing, off-beat book called "The Circus of Dr. Lao." The good doctor was an authentic wizard in his spare time and his sideshow included several celebrated big shots from mythology. One of them was Medusa, and the customers were solemnly warned not to look her in the eye, lest they be turned to stones. A lady from Iowa ig nored the injunction one day and was promptly transformed as adver tised. Her husband, prop erly disturbed, started to drag her out of the side show tent when an at tendant rushed ud and bawled, "Hey, you can't take that statue out of here." To which, naturally, the husband replied angrily, "That ain't no statue. That's my wife!" A famous efficiency expert died and waa accorded a mapnifi cent funeral. The pallbearers were carrying the casket down the steps of the church when auddanly the lid popped open and the deceased sat up to advise, "If you'd put this casket on wheels, you could lay off four men.' When Jim Curley wu mayor of Boston, he ruled his ward heelers with an iron hand. A reporter once asked him, "is it true that you'd take the false teeth out of the mouths of your follow, en if they crossed you up?" -Why not?" answered Curley :andidly. "I put them there, didn't I?" hv Brnnitl Ceil. Similarly, from time to time on a mink ranch, a fe male of the wild brown va riety will give birth to a lit tle mink whose fur may be a rich dark color. The ranch er will then breed for this color because the skins are likely to have a much great er value than do the skins of the wild animal. I have read that all of the many va rieties of dog we have today were bred by men from two wild dog-like animals the jackal and the wolf. Would Ask Veterinary The point that I am mak ing here is that if a dog breeder were to see one of his animals with a scabby mange due to a bacterium or a mold, he would ask his vet erinary to clean it up with some medicine, but when a mutant shows up perhaps a strange, beautiful and un usual puppy that is likely to take a prize at the annual dog show the breeder will not think of asking his vet erinarian to "cure" it; he will know it is just a different va- MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFOHD. OREGON By Jimmy Hado f WE CAN KETCM THE I MATINEE AT THE I RIIDLPVi-IlP . ' Teenagers Cited For Smoking In Public Two Medford boys and a girl from 16 to 17 years old were cited by Medford police Friday for violation of a city ordinance juveniles smok ing. A 16-year-old boy and a 17-ycar-old boy were cited at J st. near 12th st., Medford, alter an officer observed them smoking. The girl was cited at the Oakdale Market, 415 South Oakdale ave, after an officer observed her smoking outside the store. CALL OF THE WILD Scarborough, Eng. - ll'PH David Smith, 9, left a note for his parents Saturday: "1 am running away. Have fun," then picked up his fishing rod and left home. David's father found him Sunday in this port city, 40 miles from home, fish ing happily from a dock. Alongside him were a recent ly caught cod, whilefish and an eel. riety of dog, and he will quick ly breed many more dogs like it. As I said, in many ways the hereditary difficulties that plague so many of us behave like mutations. Every so often in times past, a new variety of man would appear in a cer tain family perhaps a va riety lacking some necessary chemical that does something important in the normal body. For instance, in infants with "galactosemia" the child lacks the ferment which enables its body to hairttlc sugar of milk, and in phenylketonuria the child lacks the ferment that enables it to handle a substance called phenylala nine. Every year now new di seases of this type are being discovered. If a number of in fants with one of these de fects were to grow up and get married to persons with the same defect, we might soon have a new variety of the human race, in which most of the infants born would ; have the peculiar chemical defect. I Eecause chemists have been able to supply diabetics with insulin, gouty persons with colchicine, and people with pernicious anemia with B-12 all of them substances that the persons need if they are to stay well or perhaps alive I have hope that with time, research workers will find more and more of the chemicals that arc needed to keep alive and well the peo ple who are born with a de feet in nerves, muscles, ten dons, joints, skin or other or sans. Substitution Possible Now that chemists are learn ing so much about the spe cial nucleic acids that make up our genes the tiny units that preside over making the ferments that we so greatly need in our bodies it is conceivable that someday a good gene will be substituted for a defective one, and then perhaps a person with dia betes can. be cured so well that none of his descendants will ever get the disease Perhaps a man with Hunting ton's chorea will be supplied with a chemical that will keep his nerves from being slow ly destroyed. Strange to say, as I wrote this, I opened a journal and read that in the case of a hy brid wheat which was unsat isfactory because the male plants were sterile, scientists have just found the "missing link" gone, which restores fer tility to the hybrid, and in creases its yield!
