Some) Conditionl Hard to Cura
Many people write me ask
ing if there isn't someone,
somewhere, who can cure an
Inherited nervous condition
they have,
such as Hunt

al sclerosis, or
an Inherited
chemical de
fect, such as
diabetes,
gout, or per-
Alvarei mcious ane
mia. Sadly, I have to say, no,
I know of no complete cure,
and I do not expect soon to
see one. Why? Because in so
many ways the inherited con
ditions are like the mutations
which show up at intervals
in many forms of life. In such
conditions, the person is born
without a needed chemical
or with a poorly constructed
organ like a pancreas or kid
ney. Unfortunately, we doc
tors cannot hope to rebuild
a defective organ.
To show what I mean:
Charles Darwin once told
about a farmer who went out
one morning and found that
a ewe in his flock had given
birth to some strange-looking
Iambs that had little short
legs, like those of a dachshund.

THEY'RE MAKING a movie of Charles Finney's fascinat
ing, off-beat book called "The Circus of Dr. Lao." The
good doctor was an authentic wizard in his spare time and
his sideshow included
several celebrated big
shots from mythology.
One of them was Medusa,
and the customers were
solemnly warned not to
look her in the eye, lest
they be turned to stones.
A lady from Iowa ig

day and was promptly
transformed as adver

drag her out of the side

To which, naturally, the husband replied angrily, "That

These lambs represented a

the farmer chose to breed a
number of them because
they could not jump over
fences, as his normal sheep
could do.
Similarly, from time to
time on a mink ranch, a fe
male of the wild brown va
riety will give birth to a lit
tle mink whose fur may be
a rich dark color. The ranch
er will then breed for this
color because the skins are
likely to have a much great

of the wild animal. I have
read that all of the many va

were bred by men from two
wild dog-like animals the
jackal and the wolf.
Would Ask Veterinary
The point that I am mak
ing here is that if a dog
breeder were to see one of
his animals with a scabby
mange due to a bacterium or
a mold, he would ask his vet

some medicine, but when a
mutant shows up perhaps
a strange, beautiful and un

take a prize at the annual

not think of asking his vet

CALL OF THE WILD

David Smith, 9, left a note for

then picked up his fishing rod

riety of dog, and he will quick
ly breed many more dogs like
it.
As I said, in many ways the
hereditary difficulties that
plague so many of us behave
like mutations. Every so often
in times past, a new variety
of man would appear in a cer
tain family perhaps a va
riety lacking some necessary
chemical that does something
important in the normal body.
For instance, in infants with
"galactosemia" the child lacks
the ferment which enables
its body to hairttlc sugar of
milk, and in phenylketonuria
the child lacks the ferment
that enables it to handle a
substance called phenylala
nine. Every year now new di
seases of this type are being
discovered. If a number of in
fants with one of these de
fects were to grow up and
get married to persons with
the same defect, we might
soon have a new variety of
the human race, in which
most of the infants born would ;
have the peculiar chemical
defect. I
Eecause chemists have been
able to supply diabetics with
insulin, gouty persons with
colchicine, and people with
pernicious anemia with B-12
all of them substances that
the persons need if they are
to stay well or perhaps alive
I have hope that with
time, research workers will
find more and more of the
chemicals that arc needed to
keep alive and well the peo
ple who are born with a de
feet in nerves, muscles, ten
dons, joints, skin or other or
sans.
Substitution Possible
Now that chemists are learn
ing so much about the spe
cial nucleic acids that make
up our genes the tiny units
that preside over making the
ferments that we so greatly
need in our bodies it is
conceivable that someday a
good gene will be substituted
for a defective one, and then
perhaps a person with dia
betes can. be cured so well
that none of his descendants
will ever get the disease
Perhaps a man with Hunting
ton's chorea will be supplied
with a chemical that will keep
his nerves from being slow
ly destroyed.
Strange to say, as I wrote
this, I opened a journal and
read that in the case of a hy
brid wheat which was unsat
isfactory because the male
plants were sterile, scientists
have just found the "missing
link" gone, which restores fer
tility to the hybrid, and in
creases its yield!
