MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, OREGON WEDNESDAY. NOVEMBER 7. 1962 SCHOOL NEWS CP Elementary Central Point David Car rigan is editor of the Pointer Pup school newspaper this year. Other staff members are John Lacy, sports editor; Ver na Rempert, tips for girls; Jackie Paulsen, joke editor, and Kristine Friesen, poetry editor. Room reporters include: Debbie Burton, Judy Glines, Suzanne Pottruff. Sue St. Arnold, Stephanie Broom field, Dwight Christie, Jackie Paulsen. Gail Bartholomew, Billy Watson, Pam White head, Loretta Rogers, Eldon Allison, John Lacy, David Carrigan, Debbie Larngan, Mike Bedingficld. Emerine King, and Verna Rempert. Jeff Pinkham was elected president of our student body. Other officers are Mike John son, vice president; Kristi Stevens, secretary; Craig Ri ley, sergeant at arms and Kent Curtis, safety chairman. The library has more than 100 new books. Mrs. Warren Holbrook is assisting the different librarians each morning. Howard School The room mothers for Miss Mary Klocker's first grade are Mrs. Peter Bateman and Mrs. Victor David. They had charge o f the Halloween party. Gary Colton of Office Sta tionery and Supply company and Greg Cameron of KSHA Radio station visited our classroom on Education-Business day Oct. 25. On Wednesday, Oct. 24, the children received their pro gress reports for the first six weeks of school. We had our individual pictures taken on Oct. 25. This has been a busy week for the first graders in Mrs. Jane Wickman's room. We have been working on our Halloween artwork. The big gest project was drawing and painting some huge orange pumpkins. We have been in the first grade for six weeks and on Wednesday, Oct. 24 our first progress reports were sent home. On Thurs., Oct. 25. we had our pictures taken, and later in the morning we were visit ed by two Medford business men. Our room mothers, Mrs. H. W. Gifford and Mrs. Z. W. Laurine planned a very nice Halloween party for us, and we enjoyed it very much. The room mothers for Mrs. Dorothy Arney's room are Mrs. D. C. Thames and Mrs. Bruce Rawlins. They planned a Halloween party for us. and we made party hats to wear. O ur October birthdays were: Kevin Pugmire, Jay Myers, Lesley Madden, and Neil Johnson all turned six years old. We are glad to know Mary Kecsee is soon to be home from the hospital. We have missed her and will be glad to ce her again. Individual conferences for parents of beginning students have been completed and we wish to thank the parents for their cooperation. Conferences in January will be scheduled to go over the work the chil dren have accomplished. We were pleased to have Greg Cameron of Radio Sta tion KSHA visit us on Oct. 25, Education-Business day. He told us about his work at the studio. On that day we also had our school pictures taken by Braincrd's Mrs, Margatel Mann's sec ond grade had a most enjoy able Halloween party. Mrs. Robert Adams. Mrs. I. B. Millard and Mrs. Hal Jenks are our room mothers. We all made Halloween decorations. Mark Adams, Laura Myers and Kelly Graham celebrated October birthdays. Linda Newman has moved to Salem, Ore. and Michael Sims has transferred lo Gold Hill. George Bratchcr entered our school from Compton, Calif. Two October birthdays were celebrated in Mrs. Mary Aldrich's second grade room. Terri Wyman and Layne Dobbs were honored at the birthday table. We played games, had special music, and enjoyed refreshments. In Mrs. Flossie Murray's room there are 13 children, seven girls and six boys. In science, we have studied about deer and seeds. We are going to study weeds and leaves next. We went to Ashland park on a field trip. We saw deer, ducks, peacocks and an eagle. We made a book about our trip to Ashland park. Oct. 26, we visited Mrs. Marian S. Montgomery's room at Wilson school. We ate lunch with them. We sang songs and played games wnn them. In the third grade rooms we are taking down the many decorations we made for Halloween. It was fun making the goblins, witches, owls, bats and ghosts. In arithmetic, we are learn ing to borrow in subtraction. Our science the last few weeks has been about plants. We had several movies from which we learned that most plants start from seeds, but that new plants can also be started from roots, stems, and leaves. Eddie Randall, i n Mrs. Huldah Fisher's room, started a carrot plant from a carrot which is a tap root. Sharon Walter from Mrs. Audrey Berry's room started a sweet potato plant. Several bean plants have been started by nttttine a blotter in a glass and placing the seeds between the blotter and glass, then wetting the blotter, in this wav wp ran all see the seeds sprout and begin to grow. A philodcndron plant nas Deen started from a stem which was placed in a glass of water until it rooted. Mrs. Fisher's room has two new boys: Ralph Fowler and Michael Hall. We are glad to welcome them to our school. Oct. 25 was Business-Education dav and it was an inter esting experience to have these business people visit our school. ilant Junior GAA members. Dressed in black tights, white tennis shoes and white pillow cases the Juniors, capt ained by Judy Guss, sang "Girls, Girls, Girls," only with the small revision of "Juniors, Juniors, Juniors" are going to win. The winning seniors, dres sed in shorts, petipants, wild hats, their daddy's shirts and ties and rolled nylons gave a big yell headed by yell queen Jody Greene. The captain for this team was Darlene Shel ley. Paula Obenchain, Josephine Jones and Vicki Caldwell were referees for the game and Sharon Graham kept time. Keeping track of the 7-0 score in favor of the seniors was Junior Carol Straus. Karen Griggs was elected District Future Homemakers of America secretary Satur day, Oct. 27, at Medford High school. She, along with Mich elle Dube, district chairman, will plan next year's district meeting which will ba held in Phoenix. "You and Your Values" was the theme of the meeting at tended by 13 Crater delegates with two adults. The girls were Virginia Tomlinson, president; Judie Post, treas urer; Darlene Thompson, his torian; Karen Griggs, repcler and Carolee Kuest, Polly Aye, Vicki Caldwell, Paula Davis, Donna Hammond, Donna Deb rick, Lynn Mang, Margaret Gardner and Gayle Griggs. The adults were Mrs. Fran ces Willett, advisor and Mrs. Thompson, mother. Crater FHA was responsible for the roll call. Polly Aye and Karen Griggs called the names and put the chapters name of the sign post. Representing Crater at the annual State Girls Athletic association convention were juniors, Sharon Issacs, Claudia Chase, Joyce Anderson and Gloria Thompson; sophomore, Sue Conway, and the advisor, Miss Nancy Purviance. The meeting was held at Clack amas High school in Mil- waukie, Ore. on Saturday, Oct. 27. The girls left Crater Friday after school and traveled lo Albany by way of the Drivers Training car. They spent the night in Albany, Ore., and were en route to Milwaukie bright and early Saturday morning. After a general meeting the girls were fed cookies and orange juice. Campaign speeches for the state offices of the state GAA were given and delegates from each chap ter voted for the girl of their choice during the first buzz session. After a lunch the installa tion of new officers was held in the auditorium. The Mc Minnville GAA presented a basketball demonstration af ter the second buzz session and then the state GAA meet ing was dismissed. Five tired, but excited girls and one ad visor arrived in Central Point at midnight Saturday. The first Future Farmers of America Halloween hay- ride was held Wednesday, Oct. 31. The FFA invited the FHA and the party set out at 7 p.m. in five big hay trucks. Arriving an hour and one half later at Bob Ryan's ranch the group was fed hot dogs, potato chips, cocoa, root beer and marshinallows around a roaring fire. After eating the boys and girls returned to the trucks for the exciting ride back lo Crater. 'Peace and Order' Reported Enforced Washington IUPl Louisiana State Atty. Gen. Jack P. F. Gremillion told the Supreme Court Tuesday his state was enforcing "peace and order," not racial segregation, when sit-in demonstrators were con victed in 1960 in New Or leans. Gremillion's statement was part of the second day of ar gument before the court on sit-in cases which may pro duce the most significant race decisions since the school seg regation cases of 1954. Attorney John P. Nelson, representing the sit -In dem onstrators at New Orleans, concluded his argument that the demontralors were denied their constitutional rights when they were convicted of trespass. The experts said Zhivkov appears to be following in the footsteps of Nikita Khru shchev, who fired Premier Nikolai Bulganln and took his job on the pretext that Bul ganin was a member of an "antiparty Broup." Oregon Employment In September Higher Eugene - IUPII - The Oregon Business Review said Tuesday employment in Oregon in Sep tember of this year was high er than in any other Septem ber in the state's history. Employment during that month reached 726,100, which wes 21,400 more than the pre vious September, the publica tion said. In Mrs. Helen Whitsett's room the fourth grade is studying about Indians of the Pacific Northwest. The class is collecting pictures of Indi ans and also gathering togeth er any articles of Indian life for a room display. In science, the class is learn ing how birds, airplanes, heli copters and jets fly. Also, they are learning what the differences are in the way these things are able to fly. Hnward school won tlicir last football game against Griffin creek and we played Jacksonville, Nov. 1. Ronald Quackenbush's sixth-grade social studies class has been studying the country of Mexico. Many students have made shoe-box dioramas to illustrate various aspects of Mexican culture. The dio ramas were made in Mrs. Birdseye's art class. Robin Grissom is chairman of a committee collecting and displaying current news items relating to the Cuban crisis. Other committee members arc: Linda Wrig'tt, Pennie Hall and Mike Harsh. Election of the second six week's student officers was recently held in Jack Bailey's room. Johnny Jack is our new president; Laurie Rawlins is vice president and Fred Rone is secretary. Marta Poole and Marjorie Garcia were elected housekeepers; Cheryl Spar ling, paper monitor, and Curl Charley, messenger. In history we are studying how our country grew. At the present time we are studying how we acquired the Louisi ana territory. We were very happy to wel come a new boy to our room. He is from Anchorage. Alaska and his name is Robert Darling.
