Newspaper Page TextBlack Tornado Polishing For Grants Pass Fracas Medford'i Black Tornado is "polishing every thing up both offense and defense, as it primes for showdown battle with Grants Pass high this Friday night at Grants Pass. "We're working on our regular stuff," said Medford Coach Fred Spiegelberg this morning. The Southern Oregon con ference and District 6 A-l fool ball championship is the prize at stake along with a berth n the state title playoffs. Medford, already certain of at least a tie for the league diadem, will gain a clear cut crown with a victory or tie. Grants Pass must win to gain a co-championship and will represent the district in the playoffs if it does. Players Injured Spiegelberg reported stellar linebacker Gary Griffin and fullback and punter Tim Mur ray ailing as the result of in jury in the Ashland game last Friday. Tackle Mike Mayfield joined the hobbled yesterday afternoon. Griffin has a bruised shoul der. Murray reinjured an ankle. On the last play of yesterday's dummy drill, May field turned his ankle. Goal line work was part of yesterday's practice field ac tivity. The usual jam-packed crowd is expected Friday for the big encounter. Blocks of tickets sent to Medford for the tussle were bought up in short order Monday. Extra bleacher scats are being moved to the GP field, according to a report from the Climate city. Kiwanis To Sponsor Whitworth-SOC Tilt Medford Kiwanis club will sponsor the game later this month between Whilworth and Southern Oregon colleges. Kiwanis board of directors voted yesterday to lake on the sponsorship. Horb Partridge, a grad of Whitworlh, was named chairman for the proj ect. The game will be played on either Thanksgiving day, Nov. , 22, or on Saturday, Nov. 24. at the Medford High school stadium. Which date depends on whether Medford reaches the state prep semifinals. Should the Black Tornado ad vance that far, it would have the choice of dates. Whitworlh, in recent years has been one of the small col lege athletic powers ot the nation. The Pirates last week end sewed up the Evergreen conference title. Northwestern struggled to a 26-21 victory over Indiana last Saturday to run its season record to 6-0 while Wisconsin routed Michigan, 34-12, for its fifth victory in six games. Alabama, Southern Cali fornia, Mississippi and Texas Northwestern's closest chal lengers for the national championship-are listed as solid favorites for their week end engagements. The Irish, who entertain the Pirates at 8 p.m. on Fri day, go into the skirmish with a record of 22-3 over the past three seasons. They've dropped only one tilt per fall over the last three years and will go against the Bucs with Vets Day Observance At Gun Club Veterans day will be ob served this Sunday at Med ford Gun club with all vet erans participating receiving a free round of targets. There will be trapshooting for all persons interested. Prizes are being offered. In last Sunday's shooting 25-straight scores were fired at 16 yards by Bill Byant Jr., Gene Hunt, Paul Culbertson and Henry Nicdermeyer. The Irish were 6-0 in the loop. They defeated Glide 27 to 0 last Friday to clinch the diadem. Only Rid dle loss this season was to Gold Beach 19 to 12 in a non league brush. Bill Markham, a halfback has paced the Riddle scorers this fall. His brother, Mike Markham, is a fine passer, who also can run with the ball. Main receivers for Mike have been his brother, Bill, Gary Paetz, Gary Frahm, Art Fisher and Keith Hanson. Paetz is called a "remarkable receiver." Work Cul Out Other capable backs of Coach Bill Baxter's club in clude Larry Ruckcl. John Brown and Tom Morrison. Out at Phoenix Coach Jack Woodward has pointed out that the Pirates "have their work cul out if they are go ing to make any showing at all." There seems to be a big task at Phoenix of building up enthusiasm for the contest. Pirate fervor has been some what softened by the fact that forfeit by St. Mary's boosted the Phoenix club into the dis trict title game. The Medford parochial school handed Phoe nix its only setback this fall. But, Ihe Buccaneers have come far since that tussle and there are a good number of gridiron followers who feel that Phoenix has the stronger team and best repre sentative of the league. Williams, Consbruck Ail " On the dark side of the ledger for the Pirates, never theless arc injuries to quarter back Ron Williams and half back Jim Consbruck. Wil liams suffered a knee injury against Sacred Heart last Fri day and has not worked out this week. Consbruck has a Charley horse. Thev might play against Riddle and they might not, said Woodward. Injury to Williams in parti cular is upsetting to Pirate plans. For. even if he does play, the Pirates don't have him during practice. Williams is a defensive cog as well and could be miss-d if not avail able against the Irish aerial game. The patch will be awarded lo Jerolamon for bowling 100 pins or more above his 1961 1962 average. This American Bowling congress award is new this year. Jerolamon will be the first at Roxy to receive it. Jerolamon has recorded a 277 game in the league this season. His average for last season was 168. Lee Corey qualified for the Century club recently at Med ford lanes. He chalked up a 273 in the Independent league. His average for 1961-1962 was 157. Snead, Palmer Cup Favorites By LEO H. PETERSEN UPI Sports Editor Buenos Aires - IUPII - Slam min' Sam Snead, admitting that ''I must be coming apart at the seams now that I'm 50," promised today he will ignore a painful right foot and compete in the Interna tional trophy and Canada cup golf matches starting on Thursday. "After all, this might be my last shot at this one so some pain isn't going to keep me from playing," Snead said. "There is not a chance in the world that I will withdraw." Snead has a pinched nerve between the second and third toes on his right foot. He has it tightly bandaged. "It hurts when I walk, but not when I am shooting," Snead explained. "So long as it stays that wav, I'll be all right." So fiir it certainly hasn't affected his game in practice rounds for the big Internation al tourney, which will see two man teams from 33 nations competing for the individual and team trophies. OCC Back Honor Goes To Bennett Portland - (UPI) - Southern Oregon halfback Kerm Ben nett and Portland State end Jim Hollingsworth today were named Oregon Collegiate con ference football back and line man of the week. Bennett ran for three touch downs and Hollingsworth caught two scoring passes as the Red Raiders defeated the Vikings 41-26 last week end at Ashland to clinch a tie for the conference championship. Bennett took over the con ference scoring lead from j Portland State halfback Billy i (Bye-Bye) White with two games remaining this season ; for each player. Bennett has scored 54 points on nine touch downs to 49 points for White. White held onto the rushing lead with 573 yards and South ern Oregon quarterback Doug Olsen kept his wide margin for the passing lead with 1, 245 yards. ANKLE BLIGHTS Madras, India -tUPD- India's first chance at the Davis Cup may be blighted by a sprained ankle. The ankle belongs to singles ace Ramanathan Krish- nan, who is rated as the key man in India's hopes of beat ing Mexico in the inter-zone final here next month. The winner of those matches will go on to challenge Australia for the cup. Aaron Wagman, who hai pleaded guilty to fixing charges, has testified he had discussed game-fixing in 1957 with Molinas, an ex-Columbia University and professional basketball player.
