CUB SCOUT NEWS Pack 6 Cub Scouts Pack 6 of Wash ington school and their par ents attended the second fall Pack meeting Oct. 23. For the third consecutive month Den 1 was awarded the "Cubbie" lor the largest number attending the meet ing. Entertainment for the eve ning were skits presented by Den I, "Heros in Shadow" and Den 8, "Heros of the Pony Express." The Pack bid farewell to Committee Chairman Don Carlon who has given many years of faithful service to the Pack. He will remain ac tive in Scouting on a training level. Awards were certainly the order of the evening with many being awarded. Induct ed into Cub Scouts and re ceiving their Bobcat pin were: Mark Lawton, Jeff Dippel, Lloyd Lawton, Wade Sharp, Bobert Lewis, Gene Grolean, Scott Barker and Tom Hol lingsworth. A special award was given, In the form of a tie tac pin, to several of the boys who have persuaded a friend to become a member of the Scouting organization. They were: Mike Oliver, Leroy Lawton, Joe Williamson, My ron Gaston, Jerry Hollings worth, Donald Williams and Stephen Pean. Receiving their wolf badge were: Joe Williamson, Mike Oliver. Steve Rheinsling and with silver arrow, Dale Rob ertson, Bob Riggs and Eddie Bittle. Receiving their bear badge were: Keith Robbins and Roy Schumacher: receiving a lion badge was Thomas Tope, with gold arrow were John Strat ford, and Thomas Tope, and with silver arrow. Thomas Tope, John Stratford, and Jerry Hollingsworth, 2. Assistant denner awards were received by Rick Stev ens. Rodney McConnell, El liott Braaten and Allen With am; denner awards by Ritchy Pope. Bob Ruck, Jimmy Tay lor, and Randy Marrs. Receiving their one year pins were Ralph Smith, Kelly Vchytil and John Cooney, two-year pins by Mitch Gib yon and three year pins to Myron Gaston and David Mann. Adult leaders receiving their three year pin were Rob ert Chriss. Donald W. Carlon, Mrs. Ernest M. Ferguson, and Mrs. Myron Gaston. In a ceremony conducted by Donald Stratford, Webelos leader, and assisted by Den Chief David Gooden. Thomas Tope was inducted into the Webelos den. Having completed their ten ure in Cub Scouting four boys were graduated into the Boy Scouts in ceremonies conduct ed by Boy Scout leaders Rob ert D. Price and Robert W. Hawkins. They were Dewayne Butler, Myron Gaston. John Thomas and Robert Rieche. Distribution of Trees By Hoovers Reaches 70,000 By DOTTIE HARBISON Mail Tribune Correspondent Eagle Point - Some 8,850 small trees were given to school youngsters last week by Mr. and Mrs. Charles C. Hoover to bring their total to about 35,850 trees given away this year. . When the Hoovers give the remainder of what is present ly in their yard, they will have totaled about 70,000 trees. Mr. and Mrs. Hoover start ed out with the Primary school at Eagle Point Tuesday morning and gave each youngster in the First through Fourth grade a potted Colo rado Blue spruce. During the afternoon they distributed White and Norway spruce and juniper trees to ail youngsters in the Fifth, Sixth and Sev enth grades at the elementary school in Eagle Point. Since Eagle Point had nev er had a queen representative of the tree program, Hoover selected a queen complete with her court to serve as Miss Colorado Blue Spruce at Eagle Point. Hoover selected Miss Beth Castor, as the first red haired queen. As princesses he selected Gretchen Ousterhout, Karen Flury, Debby Grissom, and Dolores Beebbee. Ky Hope well, Alan Ousterhout, Greg Walch and Dan Osterman were selected as dukes. Blend Colon In Community Hoover showed the young sters a large colored picture to demonstrate how he hopes to blend the colors throughout the community by giving the older youngsters white and Norway spruce and juniper trees. He told the youngsters that this project could never have been possible without the help and cooperation of the Eagle Point schools. Many children aided in the wrap ping of the trees that were distributed throughout the valley. They also helped in various stages of the experi mental program from the start and commented, "You are just as enthusiastic over the project today as the first day I came," "We feel sure, and have every reason to believe that the tree program will fie a thorough success in southern Oregon." He went on to add, "Both Mrs. Hoover and myself are very pleased with the results over the past four years. We have worked with and made various experiments and im provements in our tree pro gram." Mr. and Mrs. Hoover start ed their project under the sponsorship of the Eagle Point Grange, but are now giving trees to ail organizations or groups working with tret's for public service projects only. They are working with churches, garden clubs schools, and kindergartens in Klamath, Jackson, Josephine, and Douglas counties. They plan io travel with the tree project until next spring, Wednesday, Mr. and Mrs Hoover distributed 350 trees at Shady Cove and 300 trees at Elk Trail io children, tearh ers, and employees of the schools. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1962 Traffic Claims Three in Oregon By United Preii International Traffic accidents c 1 a i med three lives in Oregon during the week end. The victims were Mrs. Glad ys Rinker, 42, Bay City; Wayne Langley, 8, Warm Sp.ings, and Jesse Heifer, 58, Portland. Mrs. Rinker and the Lang ley boy died Sunday. Mrs. Rinker was injured fatally in a one-car accident 13 miles east of Tillamook. She died several hours after the accident at a Tillamook hospital. The Langiey boy was struck and killed by a car on a small bridge on State Highway 26 five miles west of Madras. State police said Luther Ip ock, 39, Bend, was driving the car. Heifer died when his pick up truck left U. S. Highway 30 near Pendleton Friday night. for Klamath Falls where they distributed 7,000 more trees to add to the 6,200 trees al ready given to the Klamath Falls city and county school children and teachers earlier this year. Nov. 4 the couple gave a Colorado Blue spruce to everyone who bought a ticket to the Harvest Festival being sponsored by the Rogue River Grange. They will repeat this offer for the Central Point Grange next Saturday at their annual dinner. Hoover pointed nut how well the trees look that the Central Point Garden club planted and are caring for at Central Point school grounds. Diilribuled Trees in Kansas Last month Mr, and Mrs, Hoover flew to Kansas and gave 21,000 trees to residents of Mrs. Hoover's home county token of her memork-s and a gift ol friendship. Sir. and Mrs. Hoover each made separate deliveries to com plete their distribution before having to return home. People in Kansas were "overwhelmed" with the tree project and told the Hoovers that "while the 23,ftBS trees are growing and gaining in stature they will also stand as a testiment of the project.
