WAY OF SAYING "THANKS" Vcnita Goble, a second
grader, gives C. C. Hoover a kiss in exchange for a potted
Colorado Blue Spruce tree during a morning session at Eagle
Point primary school recently.
Distribution of Trees By Hoovers Reaches 70,000
By DOTTIE HARBISON
Mail Tribune Correspondent
Eagle Point - Some 8,850
small trees were given to
school youngsters last week
by Mr. and Mrs. Charles C.
Hoover to bring their total to
about 35,850 trees given away
this year.
. When the Hoovers give the
remainder of what is present
ly in their yard, they will
have totaled about 70,000
trees.
Mr. and Mrs. Hoover start
ed out with the Primary
school at Eagle Point Tuesday
morning and gave each
youngster in the First through
Fourth grade a potted Colo
rado Blue spruce. During the
afternoon they distributed
White and Norway spruce and
juniper trees to ail youngsters
in the Fifth, Sixth and Sev
enth grades at the elementary
school in Eagle Point.
Since Eagle Point had nev
er had a queen representative
of the tree program, Hoover
selected a queen complete
with her court to serve as
Miss Colorado Blue Spruce at
Eagle Point. Hoover selected
Miss Beth Castor, as the first
red haired queen.
As princesses he selected
Gretchen Ousterhout, Karen
Flury, Debby Grissom, and
Dolores Beebbee. Ky Hope
well, Alan Ousterhout, Greg
Walch and Dan Osterman
were selected as dukes.
Blend Colon In Community
Hoover showed the young
sters a large colored picture
to demonstrate how he hopes
to blend the colors throughout
the community by giving the
older youngsters white and
Norway spruce and juniper
trees.
He told the youngsters that
this project could never have
been possible without the
help and cooperation of the
Eagle Point schools. Many
children aided in the wrap
ping of the trees that were
distributed throughout the
valley. They also helped in
various stages of the experi
mental program from the
start and commented, "You
are just as enthusiastic over
the project today as the first
day I came,"
"We feel sure, and have
every reason to believe that
the tree program will fie a
thorough success in southern
Oregon."
He went on to add, "Both
Mrs. Hoover and myself are
very pleased with the results
over the past four years. We
have worked with and made
various experiments and im
provements in our tree pro
gram." Mr. and Mrs. Hoover start
ed their project under the
sponsorship of the Eagle Point
Grange, but are now giving
trees to ail organizations or
groups working with tret's for
public service projects only.
They are working with
churches, garden clubs
schools, and kindergartens in
Klamath, Jackson, Josephine,
and Douglas counties. They
plan io travel with the tree
project until next spring,
Wednesday, Mr. and Mrs
Hoover distributed 350 trees
at Shady Cove and 300 trees
at Elk Trail io children, tearh
ers, and employees of the
schools.
