6 B THURSDAY. OCTOBER 11. 1362 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON Total Number 01 Forest Fires In Area Down In '62 The total number of forest fires in southern Oregon was down during the past fire sea son but the number of man caused fires was up, according to reports presented to the timber committee, Southern Oregon Conservation and Tree Farm association at a meeting this week. Curt Neshciem. distirct warden, southwest Oregon dis trict, Oregon slate department of forestry, reported a total of 227 fires for the past sea son, comparcd.to 265 fires in 1961. He noted, however, that the number of man-caused fires, 188, represented an in crease over last fire season. Bob Torheim. fire control officer, Rogue River Nation al forest, complimented Ion-1 King operators for their excel lent record this season and re ported that there were no re ports of fires on the Rogue River National forest from logging operations. He said that the total for the year. 23, was a decided improvement over last year when a total of 93 fires of all types were controlled. Ncshcim pointed out that the operator caused fires on state protected lands account ed for 12 of the 227 total. Of these 12, one fire in the Cave Junction area which caused a burn of 30 acres accounted for the bulk of the acreage lost to operator caused fires. The other 11 accounted for only a little over Hi acres. The total acreage lost in the 227 total fires was 2.3B4 on stale protected lands, Nc shcim said. The number of fires on the Rogue River National forest was the lowest on record. Tor helm reported. Records have been tabulated on the forest since 1909.
