But ".mental illness is more than a medical problem; it is a hu ;man problem," H. Dewey Wil san, president of the Jackson county chapter of the Mental rHealth association of Oregon, -noted recently. T "Further progress depends ; a great deal in how well each of us understands the needs .of the mentally ill," Wilson isaid. Writers' Seminar Meeting Scheduled I h e first organizational .meeting of an active writers' seminar is scheduled Wednes day, Oct. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in "room 247 of Medford High school. i . According to Mrs. Dutch "Farfan, one of the seminar's organizers, its purpose is not to teach the fundamentals of writing but rather for open discussions, critiques and Een eral opinions of participants ( actively engaged In the writ- -.ing profession. All phases of writing will ; be represented, Mrs. Farfan said, and the interest and sug gestions of all writers will be sincerely welcomed and ac cepted. There will be no fee for the seminar. OSU Leading in Enrollment Figures Eugene - (UPI) - Incomplete enrollment figures as of Thursday showed 9,741 stu dent registered at Oregon :State university and 8,116 at :the University of Oregon, the rchancellor's office of the State Board of Higher Edu cation said today. Mr. XJurber has taken these pic tures for the last several years. . Students attended a pep rally today during the activity period, in preparation for the Saturday night game with Phoenix. A short skit was cn Scted by seniors Mike Stin son, Fred Cuozzo, and Jim Calhoun. The theme today Was "Beat Phoenix Day." Members of the football equad, during noon periods, witnessed movies of 1961 games with Lakeview and Phoenix. Purpose was to point out the mistakes and to motivate corrective measures. "Early recognition of ill ness, early diagnosis and treat ment, modern therapeutic, mental hospitals, effective fac ilities for treatment during convalescence, and public un derstanding that mental ill ness is not a hopeless disease, are basic needs of the mentally ill," Wilson stated. The Mental Health associ ation is one of 30 approved agencies of the United Cru sade and is included in its fund raising campaign now under way. The association works through an educational pro gram to extend and develop better services for the emo tionally and mentally ill in Oregon. The organization also promotes legislation which falls within its field of inter est. As part of its service to the community, speakers, pamph lets, and films are available to interested groups, Wilson said. Contracts Awarded For Five Vehicles The Jackson county court today awarded contracts to two low bidders, one for four sheriff's cars and one for a parks and recreation depart ment tractor. Selby Chevrolet company, iuu &ast Main si., Asniana, was low bidder on four 1963 sedans for the Jackson coun ty sheriff's department at $6,196 net. The company was awarded the contract. Eatherton Engine and Equipment company 335 East McAndrews rd., Medford, was low bidder on the tractor at $2,474 and received the con tract. The bids and specifications were checked by Purchasing Coordinator William Cochran, the sheriff's department and parks and recreation depart ment. "This is the first time the Ashland company has bid on county vehicles in two years, to my knowledge, Cochran said. The net bid was $1,152 under Courtesy Chevrolet and $1,088 under Dick Knight, Medford Plymouth dealer and next lowest bidder, Cochran noted. Eatherton was one of five bidders on the tractor. Reedsport Man Is Hurt in Accident Melvin Robert Harvey, 30, Reedsport, suffered abrasions I when the car he was driving struck a parked vehicle regis tered to Jeannine Persey, 1154 Court St., about 7:15 p.m. Thursday, according to Med ford police. The accident occurred on Court St. between McAndrews rd. and Manzanita st. Harvey did not require hospitaliza tion, police said. No citation was issued. erick Burton Scott, 23, Ft. Lewis, Wash., and Delbert Lewis Curry, 25, of 908 Ken yon St., were involved in an accident about 8:32 p.m. on Riverside ave. and Edwards St., police said. Scott was cited for making an improper left turn. No in juries were reported. Antique Bicycle Said Missing from Company An antique bicycle valued at $500 has been reported taken from Valley Motor com pany, 224 North Riverside j ave., " according to Medford city police. The bicycle was reported i missing at 6 p.m. Thursday j by Isaac Newton Shults, South Stage rd. It was described as i red, with a front wheel five j feet in height and a back ; wheel 16 inches high, police j said. i Man Fined on Charge Of Starting Fire Lec Marshall, Savage Creek area, was fined $23 in Jack son county district court Thursday for burning without a permit. Marshall pleaded guilty to the charge. A complaint was filed against Marshall by fire war dens of the Oregon state for estry department for starling a fire Sept. 23.
