Comb the Territory Today there are at least 20 men who work in the lapi dary and comb the territory for material with which to work. It is not a hobby with them but a "ruling passion." The cycle of interest varies with the novelty of discovery. Dendrite agates and the many other gem varieties were con verted into jewelry at one time. Large blocks of varie- polished into book ends. The fair was conceived as a tourist attraction and a spoof of the Seattle World's Fair. It opened in a relentless downpour of rain June 2 and seldom found its head above water for the rest of the sum mer. A second "official opening" two weeks later did bring about 25.000 curious visitors to this village of 200, but backers soon found that few tourists would stop to see the sights when they were only four or five hours away from the big fair. Total attendance was about 150.000. The fair soon was faced with debts and lawsuits. It was padlocked by the sher iff once and part of its office building was torn down by an irate contractor who hadn't been paid for building it. One Horse Power The main attractions were a 10-foot high "Peace Candle" and a small revolving restau rant. Original plans called for one horse to produce the pow er used to make the restau rant revolve, but ultimately a small motor was used. Through it all. President Garland Wiley and Vice Pres ident Ed Mills radiated opti mism. "The potential is still there," Mills said Wednesday.
