But to the faithful fans of the nation's capital, it does seem almost that long since their beloved Braves were a con tender. The 1962 season does not appear to be the year of a major Redskins come back. This is the sad fact despite a winter of trading, hole-plugging and overhauling by coacn Bill McPeak who is merely hopeful and not overly opti mistic. "We should be improved but we still have a lot of work to do before we find out how much," says McPeak. This is a fair statement. The Redskins should improve, if only that it's almost impos sible for them to be any worse than they were last year -with only one victory and a tie to show in 14 games and last place finish in the NFL'i Eastern division. Hare Good Defensive Line In a nutshell, this is how the Tribe shapes up for the new campaign: -Good defensive line, with a major linebacking problem and too many question marks in the secondary. -An improved offense with greater overall speed thanks to the addition of halfbacks Bobby Mitchell and Billy Barnes, but still no outstand ing ends. -An apparent weakness at fullback, where the 'Skins have only a brittle Don Bos seler and Rookie Ron Hatcher from Michigan State. -A fair offensive line which still could use a good tackle, which must rely on an inex perienced center in sophomore Fred Hageman, and which is anchored mainly around two fine guards in Vince Promuto and John Nisby. -A potentially great but still unproven quarterback In Norman Snead, who took his lumps in last year's rookie season, plus newcomer Galen Hall of Penn State who could be the NFL's sleeper of the year. Plugs Hole With Paluck On defense, McPeak's big gest headache is the mid dle linebacking position. He has shifted defensive end John Paluck to that spot and will rely on veteran Gene Cronin to fill Paluck's shoes up front, The secondary looks im proved thanks to safctyman Bobby Freeman, obtained from Philadelphia, but it still is not a solid, experienced unit and McPeak may try out a half dozen combinations be GET THREE PLAYERS Seattle - IOTP - The Seattle Totems of the Western Hockey i league today announced the acquisition of three players from the Los Angeles Blades in exchange for defensemen I Frank Arnett and Gordon La Boissiere.
