AUGUST 22. 1962 In Planned Housing Problems Foreseen Washington-iUPIi-One-advan-tage of "packaged" housing developments is that the ore sighted builder can anticipate older communities' problems and save taxes tor the new communities. The planner of a new de velopment in suburban Lou don County. Va., found that 10 per cent of the county school budget went to trans portation expenses. So Ster ling Park was laid out to put all homes within five blocks of an elementary school. Recreation is another prob lem in exploding suburbs. For the Sterling Park project, builder Marvin T. Broyhill Jr., allocated 75 acres out of a total 1.T6S for swimming pools, golf course, tennis courts-and Little League ball fields. Games Help Young Students To Learn This year, primary grade students can' get off to a good sound start with the funda mentals of math, reading, so cial studies and science, thanks to a prize assist from designers of home recreation al materials as well as from educators. Developed in collaboration with leaders in the field of education, a wide variety of kits and games are now avail able to help youngsters "learn while playing." According to Dr. Mary Moffit. of the Toy Guidance Council Educational Advis ory board, these hot. e recre ational materials, help make learning more pleasurable to the younger student. For example, flash card kits now encompass division and fractions, as well as addition, subtraction, and multiplica tion. The frantic search for scratch paper is solved in some of the flash card kits by wipe off plastic sheets. Play ways to learning math include such ingenious de vices as a "Fractions are Easy as Pie" game which helps children learn the relation ship between fractions. A 1 game based on counting to ten, and another called Link Numbers" create competition around math basics using well-proven classroom tech niques. To dramatize the re lationship between fractions, common fractions, decimals and percemae.es - there is a new math wheel. Recongition of the fact that getting children interested in foreign languages at an early age is important, is stressed in a variety of new games keyed to teach basic French. "Words That Go To gether" is a new game kit presenting colorful object cards accompanied by words in both French and English. The French words are also, spelled phonetically. Chil dren can play alone or with up to five other children, with the aid of self checking devices. Play and learning games benefit good students as well as those who lag in their school performance, says Dr. Marcella Kelly, an educator who has developed - variety of games keyed to the curricu lum. "Sharpening of skills re lated to learning helps make each student a better schol ar."
