MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON V Senate Leaders Hope To Pass Farm Bill By Nightfall Washington - iUPIi - Senate leadens pinned their hopes to day on passing the farm bill by nightfall. They are counting on a de b a t e-limiting agreement as the key to their planning. As sistant Democratic Leader Hubert H. Humphrey, Minn., said he was sure a voluntary time limit on debate could be worked out. The pending bill contains only part of what President Kennedy asked. A more far reaching proposal was ap proved by the Senate but de feated in the House. The stiffest fight now shap ed up over a Republican ef fort to let wheat growers choose between the present program of voluntary con trols with high price sup ports and the tougher admin istration "certificate" plan. Sen. Karl Mundl' (S.D.) leader of the GOP move claimed considerable support. Humphrey, however, predict ed the Mundl amendment would be rejected. Other congressional news: Poll Tax Rep. John V. Lindsay r-N.Y.) charged to day thai House leaders had worked out a plan for appro val of a relatively mild meas ure on the poll lax tl at would fend off broader civil rights action this year, Lindpay said the leadership, and Atty. Gen. Robert F. Kennedy had made a "deal" with southern Democrats whereby the pro posed constitutional amend ment on banning the poll tax in federal elections would be approved while further ac tion on civil rights would be limited. Propaganda - A spokesman for the American Jewish Congress told the Senate Post Office committee today that a bill to bar Communist gov ernment propaganda from the mails would boomerang twice. Alan R. Wurtzel, Washington counsel for the group, said that the measure would allow the attorney gen eral to decide what type of political opinions the Amer ican people should be allow Gun Kills Former Military Flyer The Dalles -WPlu A former military flyer who had three planes shot out from under him in World War II died of a gunshot wound here Sunday night. Wasco county sheriff's depu ties said Robert Curtiss Ful ton, 46, was killed when a shotgun went off while he was cleaning it. Coroner Ken neth Libby said the death ap peared to be accidental. Fulton was a holder of the Air Medal with 16 cluslers. the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart and the French Croix de Guerre. Medford Woman Gets Gold Honor Emblem Mrs. Blanche Powell, 545 South Ivy St., Medford, has qualified foi' a solid gold honor emblem from Reader's Digest for the eighth consec utive year. According to magazine of ficials, the award is made in recognition of prominent service as a community rep resentative of the publication. The publisher? award the emblems to those who have actively represented the magazine in their communi ties for 25 years or more. v5 t ed to receive in the mail. In addition, Wurtzel said, the bill would play into the Com munists' hands by producing a reaction from Red coun- tries. He said thev would cut off the flow of U.S. mail to Iron Curtain nations, which he said was seven times great er than the amount of Red mail enterinc America.
