Unfortunately, it was found recently that growth hormone made from the pituitary glands of CATTLE cannot be counted on to help boys - the substance is chemically so dif ferent. Efforts now are being made by chemists to modify the bovine hormone so that it will work on boys, but so far only moderate success has been at tained. We would like to be giving to boys growth hormone of human or monkey origin, but it is very difficult to get per mission from the relatives of many men and women to re move their pituitary glands right after death, and one hu man gland will supply only enough hormone for one day's treatment of a dwarfed boy. Hormone from monkeys also is hard to get because monkeys'- most of which come from India - are expensive. Doctors have tried giving thyro idhormone, but I now read that it cannot be counted on to help. Some physicians have tried male and female hormones, but the experts fear to use these drugs on young sters. Especially when dealing with teen-age girls, one does not want to get their month ly cycle all jumbled up. Fortunately, many a short boy suddenly will shoot up after he is 15, and many a tall girl will stop growing -without any medicine. What Cauies Gas? I am sorry that I cannot srnd a brief, logical answer to those hundreds of people who write asking me what is good for gas. It might be hard enough to help them if I knew exactly what was causing their tendency lo flatulence. Some people develop flatu lence early in life, and the cause is not always apparent. In some cases it is definite ly due to the eating of some one fond to which the person is allergic. Then the person should leave that food alone, and if he or she is lucky, that is the end of the tendency to gas. Many persons get very gassy when they are const.-, patcd, and they get immediate relief with a bowel movement obtained perhaps with an enema of warm water with a tablespoon ful of salt in the bag. All of the water should be run in at one time and then allowed tn run right out again. Many doctors say, "Never take an enema," but I don't know why they should say this. I have never been able to get a logical answer out of ttie men who say this; and in my long medical life 1 have never seen anyone who was injured bv an enema. Trouble With Gas People with gallstones often have a good deal of trouble with gas, also people with a tendency to diarrhea often have gns. Any person whose gas doesn't seem to be due to the eating of any particular food would do well to have an x-ray study of ihe digestive tract including the gall-bladder. It would be well to have a study of the stools to make sure he hasn't any amrhas or other parasites. People who re having trouble with their heart or their liver sometimes have a good deal of gas. Many people get much gas if they eat foods hard to digest such as salads, some vege tables and some fruits.
