OREGON MEDFORDuSjjiUTRIBUNB Sanford Chalks Up His 10th Straight LA CLUBS SUFFER STAGGERING BLOWS Chicago-lUPI) - It was only last Friday that the San Fran cisco Giants were 5V4 games back ol the Los Angeles Dodg ers. Today the Giants had cut the Dodger margin to VA games after blitzing the Dodg ers three straight and winning again here Tuesday, over the Chicago Cubs. Jack Sanford look his 10th straight win and Willie Mays unloaded homer number 36 as the Giants piled up a 9-2 vic tory over Chicago on a cold, Rray day. The Dodgers were nipped by Pittsburgh 2-1 a few hours later. The Giants hoped to close the gap some more today when they send lefty Billy O'Dell (14-10) out to the hill against the Cubs Bob Buhl (8-9). Record Now 16 6 Sanford's mark now stands at 16-6, one of the loop's best. It marked the most games the big righthander has won as a Giant and his pro ductive campaign since his 19-8 freshman campaign in 1957 at Philadelphia earned his rookie of the year honors. He went all the way and spaced eight hits. Most dam aging blow against him was Ernie Banks 30th homer of the campaign in the second inning. The Giants carved up Cub starter Glen Hobbie, in a hur ry. . . In the second, Felipe Alou and Tom Haller doubled and Jose Pagan singled as two runs scored. In the third, Charlie Hiller homered, Wil lie McCovcy doubled, and a walk and wild pitch helped account for three more tallies as Hobbie headed for the showers. A single run in the fourth, and Mays' three run shot in the seventh rounded out the Giant scoring. Sailboat Regatta On Sunday Sunday, Aug. 19, will mark what is thought to be the first interclub sailing regatta ever held in the Rogue Valley. It will be sponsored by the Rogue Yacht club and will take place at Howard Prairie recreation area. Klamath Falls, Eugene, Coos Bay, and Portland clubs have been in vited. Everyone who has a sail boat is Invited lo attend and enter the races. Interesled in dividuals who would like to sign on as crew members for the various events will be wel comed as some boats are still not filled. Those interested may contact Commodore Herb Hoser at 772-9559. Trophies will be awarded to first, sec ond and third place winners in each class. Participants will have an equal chance regard less of the size of their boats because of the Portsmouth handicapping system recently adopted for racing. A skippers' meeting will be held at 10:15 a.m. on the front porch of Howard Prairie lodge to brief contestants on the course for the race and the starling limes for the different classes. Members, families, and friends will have a potluck lunch after the first race. T-l S A1 rs 1 J 1 mm Dodgers' Gap Cut To Vi Games By FRED DOWN UPI Sports Writer It was a devil of a night for the city of the Angels - a night on which both Los An geles teams suffered stagger ing blows to their pennant hopes. Can they bounce back? Has the panic set in? Was it all a fanciful Hollywood dream anyway? Who knows? But it's obvious today that a huge question mark hangs over both the Dodgers and the Angels. Especially the Dodgers. They had a 5''2 game lead in the National league only last Friday. Now they've lost four straight and its down to a mere game and a half over the San Francisco Giants. Worse, they've hit the bumpy road at precisely the stage of the pennant race at which they blew the 1961 flag by losing 10 straight games. For the Angels, it looks like "E" for effort. This gallant band of ragamuffins stayed in the race close to the New York Yankees for longer than any expert believed possible. But Tuesday night they blew a twilight-night doublehcader to the Boston Red Sox and now suddenly they're six full games from first place. McBean Won 12th The Pittsburgh Pirates ex tended the Dodgers' losing streak to four games with 2-1 triumph fashioned on the nine-hit pitching of Al Mc Bean. Doubles by Don Clen denon in the first inning and Dick Groat in Hie third drove in all the runs the Pirates needed to hand Johnny Podres his ninth loss of the season. The Giants, meanwhile, walloped the Chicago Cubs, 9-2, to extend their winning streak to five games. Jack Sanford pitched an. eight-hitter for his 16th win behind a 12-hit attack that included Willie Mays' 36th homer and Chuck Hillcr's second of the season. The Red Sox heat the An gels, 2-1,. on Lu Clinton's two run, two - out ninth - inning homer In the opener and then clubbed them, 9-5, with a burst of nine runs in the first two Innings of the nightrnp. Holier pitcher Dick Radalz won his sixth game in the opener and diet Nichols, aid ed by Mike Fornieles' relief. won his first in the second game. Yankees Gained Ground The Yankees picked up ground on both their closest pursuers with a 5-2 win over the Minnesota Twins. Tom Trcsh's three-run fifth inning homer was the big blow of an eight-hit New York attack that enabled Whitey Ford to raise his record to 13-5. Vic Power and Bob Allison hom ered for the Twins. The Milwaukee Braves end ed the Cincinnati Reds' win ning atreak at nine games, 5 4, the Houston Colts beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-3, in 10 innings and the Philadelphia Phillies scored a 3-1, 15-inning triumph over the New York Mets in the other NL games. In the other AL action, the Detroit Tigers swept the Bal timore Orioles, 13-10 and 5-4, the Chicago White Sox routed the Cleveland Indians, 9-0, and the Kansas City Athletics topped the Washington Sena tors, 6-9. Hank and Tommy Aaron hit homers and accounted for four of the Braves' five runs. Tony Cloninger went 8 23 innings before Claude Ray mond came out of the bullpen to stifle a ninth-inning Cin cinnati rally. Julian Javier's throwing error permitted Roman Mejias to score with Houston's win ning run in the 10th inning and tag fireballer Bob Gib son with his ninth loss against 14 victories. Gibson, who struck out 10, homered in his own behalf in the third in-1 when they filled the bases ning. Mel Roach's two-run 15th inning single brought Jack Baldschun his seventh win for the Phillies and handed Al Jackson, who went the dis tance for the Mets, his 15th setback against six wins. The Mets missed chances to win with one out in the ninth and when Charlie Neal led off the 13th with a triple. Al Kaline drove in seven runs with five hits, including two homers and a triple, to pace the Tigen to their two victories over the Orioles. Norm Cash also homered for the Tigers in the second game and Jerry Adair connected in each game for Baltimore. Frank Baumann pitched an eight-hitter, scored a run and singled in another to win his fifth game for the White Sox. Nelson Fox and Joe Cunning ham led the White Sox' 14-hit attack with three hits each. Pinch-hitter Billy Consolo's infield hit with the bases fill ed in the ninth inning deliver ed the winning run as the Athletics beat the Senators for the 11th straight time.
