If you build a better motel, the world doesn't have to beat a path to your door. The government will provide a six-lane divided highway. Motels, I hardly need point out, have been becoming in creasingly luxurious, palatial and super de luxe, not to men tion expensive to stay in. Any day now I expect to read that a motel has just opened with hot and cold swimming pools, restaurants, night clubs, cocktail lounges, theaters and the other famil iar accoutrements of modern roadside lodges. Only the builders discover that they forgot to provide a place for the guests to sleep. What got me on this sub ject was a press release I received heralding the open- U.S. Steps Up Test Ban Pressure Geneva-IUPD - The United States prepared a fresh at tempt Tuesday to convince the Soviet Union It should make concessions to bring about an early nuclear test ban agree ment. U. S. Ambassador Arthur H. Dean was expected to outline in detail the new American proposals to the 17 nation dis. aramamenl conference. Dean presented the new plan to the three nation Britain, the United States and the Soviet Union test ban subcommittee last week after he had helped draft it in Washington talks with Presi dent Kennedy and his advis ers. Soviet Deputy Foreign Min ister Valerian Zorin proptly rejected the American initia tive, which calls for a sub stantial reduction in the num ber of on-site inspections of suspected nuclear explosions while retaining the principle of international control. . But the United States has indicated it docs not take Zorin's word as final, and the American delegation says it hopes to persuade the Soviets to change their minds. Mark Hatfield Monday described a plan for a new community in Oregon as a solid vote o con fidence in Oregon's economy and Its continued growth. The community, Somerset West, is the largest complete ly planned community ever contemplated in the North west, according to formal plans unveiled here. The proposed $500 million city, to be built 10 miles west of Portland, will straddle the Sunset Highway. H. R. Watchie Associates of Seattle, is controlling corporation. Watchie said the firm's initial investment is $10 million for the last four years. About 6,000 acres are involved. The city is expected to be finished In 12 to 15 years. ents. Fox doesn't know much about designing motels for politicians. At least his plans didn't fit my concept of what a motel for politicians should be like. The motel I have in mind would have three types of rooms. One, located in t h e right wing, would have Birch furniture of the Louis XIV period. The second, in the left wing, would be done in pink. The third, accessible only from the rear entrance, would be for the exclusive use of back-door spenders. In addition to temperature controls, each room would have a helium outlet for in flating trial balloons. Anoth er knob would adjust the smoke content to the density suitable for selecting candi dates. There would, of course, be swagger sticks available for pointing with pride, and a picture window from which to view with alarm. Other features would in clude built - in lobbyists, a night deposit service for canv paign contributors, ' steam shovels for digging up dirt about opponents and electron' ic mud slingers.
