Four Tracts of Timber Sold By BLM at Auction ! ' Four tracts of timber, con- taming B, 814.000 board feet were sold for S183.132.60 at sn oral auction timber sale ' held by the Medford district of the bureau of land man agement on Aug. 9. A fifth tract received no bids at the sale and will be held open in accordance with the regulations for a period of DO days. That tract contains 138,000 board feet of salvage limber located along upper! Pleasant creek. j There was considerable i competition for three of the j jour tracts sold, according to John Carnegie, forester in charge of the sale. j The first tract, 1,064,000! board feet located in West i i'ork Williams creek area of i Josephine county, was pur chased by Brown Brothers Lumber company of Grants Pass for $27,178.40. Their . high bid included an offer of S25.50 per thousand board : feet for the Douglas-fir. Lane ; Plywood company, Eugene, was the unsuccessful bidder. The second Josephine coun- ty tract, 939,000 board feel lo ; rated near the head of Thomp son creek, was purchased by ; Cabax Mills of Kerby without ; competition. Continental Timber mm f pany, Medford, out-bid Parker ' Industries Inc. and Oregon Sawmill company Inc. for 1,429,000 board feet located ' near Deadwood tunnel on the '.Dead Indian area of Jack i f on county. The high bid ' of $30,095.25 included prices )of $30 per thousand board t feet for Douglas-fir and $15.75 for the white fir. " The other Jackson county tract was purchased by Parker Industries Inc. of Ashland for ' $108,300.25. This sale con-.- sisted of 3,382,000 board feet '- located near Hyatt lake. The - highest bid prices of the ma jor species were $31 per thousand board feet for the Douglas-fir and $37.50 for the ponderosa pine. Greensprings Lumber company was the un . successful bidder. Poad Construction Three of the four purchas- ers will be required to con- struct a total of 3.4 miles of " new road and the fourth pur : chaser will improve about .1 ' mile of existing road, accord- ing to Carnegie. He indicated that the bureau values the new roads at approximately $15,250 and the road improve- menls at aooui $dou ana uiey ' made allowances in those amounts in setting the ap- praised prices for the timber. Carnegie also indicated that edvertising is being processed at the present time for ten tracts containing 16,911,000 board feet which is appraised at ,$341,807.50. Five of these tracts are located in Jackson county, three are in Josephine county, one is in Klamath . county, and one is in Douglas and Curry counties. Extensive Use Made of Forest Klamath Falls - Extensive use of recreation lacilities continues on the Winema Na tional forest. According to Earl Karlin per, Klamath district ranger, some fine catches of fish have been reported on the district. Portions of the Ore gon Skyline trial are being reconstructed and improved. Most of the other trails on the district are free of snow snd many have been main tained this year. Many forest travelers are visiting Four mile lake and Lake of the Woods, it was reported. The Oregon State Game commission reports it is still not possible to restock Mil ler lake on the Chemull dis trict. The lake and its tribu taries were treated several years ago to control lamprey i-el. Testing is continually being done and, according to . the game commission, the lake will be restocked when il becomes non-toxic. The game commission also con structed an eel-pronf dam at Miller Creek Falls tn prevent future rcinvasion. With con trol of lamprey established, Miller lake and Miller creek should provide excellent fishing when they are re stocked. INFANTRY TRAINING Army National Guardsman pvt. John H. Gates and Pvt.
