Inferior Duplicates Homelike Atmosphere Dempster's new furniture store building at 1100 Barnett rd. is the culmination of dreams and plans that began in the Fall of 1056 in Med ford. Only after careful con sideration of many tentative plans and locations, was the present site and building plan approved. The building is adjudged by furniture merchants and factory salespeople to be the finest of its kind in the Pacific Northwest. Jack Raapke per sonally designed the building, incorporating a store front in a classical design with a prac tical "open look of pre-fabri cated steel and concrete con- struction. The entire building is set back from Barnett rd., with two wide entrances to a con crete parking lot that will accommodate up to 30 auto mobiles. Customers can now "Shop at the store where you park at the door," a furniture merchant s dream come true. Vast Panorama The sales floor is 180 feet long and 110 feet deep - all clear-span, affording the cus tomer a vast panorama of the largest selection of quality home furnishings within 150 miles in any direction. Apart from the dinette section, the entire sales floor is carpeted with nylon carpet. The Decorating studio fea tures a plush pile, off-while carpet that enhances the charm and styling of the choice furniture and accesso ries In the studio. The balance ot the store has been carpeted in a light beige cobblestone weave, a basic weave and color that harmonizes with the over-all decor. In keeping abreast of to days shopping habits, the store ceiling has been lowered to Jusl under ten feet, to Rive a more nearly homelike per spective in viewing the furni ture. The soft, Incandescent overhead Hsnls, plus the ac cent lighting from table lamps, duplicates as much as possible, the same general appearance ns in a home. The accoustical tile ceiling add? beauty ns well as effectively dampening sounds. Willi a series of ceiling-m o u n t e d speakers, customers are liter ally surrounded by soft music throughout the store. Comfort-Conditioned The store is comfort-conditioned throughout, with the latest and most advanced heating and air conditioning equipment available. In short, everything has been done to assure Demp ster's customers complete service and satisfaction, ade quate front door parking, largest one-floor display in the area, distinctive display, and a selection nf line quality home furnishings. Dempster, presi dent of Dempster Furniture company, Medford, lives in Santa Barbara, Calif. He re tired from active participation M" the company in 105R, when he moved to Santa Barbara where he and Mrs. Dempster built a home in Montecito. Before coming to Oregon, Dempster owned a number of furniture stores in Nebraska and Wyoming. His furniture experience started in 192B, when he opened his first hard ware and furniture store. He is an active Kiwanian, a director of the Retired Men's club of Santa Barbara, a mem ber of the Jonathan Club of Los Angeles and numerous civic organizations. His activ ities are many and varied. With Mrs. Dempster, he has travelled extensively, includ ing several trips to Europe and the Near East,, and a world cruise. While on these trips, he had occasion to visit numerous furniture - making centers in many parts of the world. The Dcmp.slcr family in cludes a son, Richard II, who is a stockbroker in Santa Bar bara, and a daughter, Betty, wife of John Raapke, vice president nf the firm. Furniture Firm Specializes In Personalized Service The new Dempster Furni ture company Is the third home In the Rogue River val ley for the company. In April, 1950, L. E. Mc Eachron and John Raapke purchased Bush Home Fur nishings on North Pacific highway. They operated and expanded this operation bringing many new ideas and items in home furnishings to the valley. 1 Their next move was in March 1957, when, with R. R ! Dempster, they purchased the j assets of the Medford Furni ture store in downtown Med ford and chanucd the name to Dempster Furniture com pany. The entire operation was greatly enlarged, includ ing a decorating studio under the leadership of John Raapke, vice president of the firm. Over a period of fivr years. the firm has developed reputation for personalized I customcr service, distinctive ' merchandise selection and su-i penor qua.n.v. or owu.-.s; attend all major furniture markets in Chicago, a, well ' as on the West cuiusl. o he JACK RAAPKE Vice President Jack Raapke was born and raised In Omaha, Neb. He at tended Creighton university and was graduated from New York School of Interior De sign., He spent three years in the service and when not flying as a pilot with the 9th Air Force, he designed and decorated officers' and enlist ed men's clubs in Europe. Before coming to Medford, Raapke managed the deco rating department at David son's, in Omaha. In the con tract field, he designed and executed the world's largest theatrical curtain. He become a member of the American Institute of In terior Designers in 1949 and was instructor of the adult educational class of interior decorating at Omaha univer sity. Raapke moved to Medford in 1956. He is a Kiwanian, a member of the Chamber of Commerce and has served as retail chairman of the Med ford Crusade and on the build ing committee of the new SI. Mary's school. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus and attends Sacred Heart par ish. Betty is his wife and they have three daughters. Mac's family consists of his wife, Betly, two sons, David 12, and Brian 8, and one daughter, Kim, 7. They live in a colonial ranch home at 517 North Barneburg rd. Mac has been active in the Retail Division of the Med ford Chamber of Commerce, is a master Mason, and teach es Sunday school at the First Presbyterian church. Verne Speirs noted that Dr. Leon Lessinger of San Diego, Calif., who conducted the workshop, has done a "tre mendous amount of work" throughout California on the program for able and gifted testing and guidance. Lessing er has said he would be avail able upon request by the county for a one-day work shop for a selected group of teachers. The committee agreed to table a motion on this until the next meeting.
