AUGUST 9, 1962 Portland Banks 1 Named Among Wall Street Firms Edilor't note - Although recent Wall street felling sent stock prices plunging, at least temporarily, there is evidence that many of the nation's b i g gest corpora lions are enjoying relative ly good times. A United Press International survey shows most of the biggest companies - those with as sets of a billion dollars or more have become even bigger in fhe past year and nine firms joined the elite "billion dollar club" for the first time. Only two former members lost their credentials.) By PETER T. EARLE United Press International New York - il'PH - The an nual United Press Internation al corporate roll call finds 120 concerns had sufficient assets at the end of 1961 to rate tliem in the elite "billion dol lar club" - a new record. Nine concerns crossed the billion dollar asset mark for the first time to take their places among the nation's cor porate giants. Two lost iheir membership. The companies which earn ed membership credentials for the first time were Interna tional Telephone. R. J. Rey nolds Tobacco, Home Savings and Loan association of Los AnRelcs (first S and L to make it). Detroit Bank and Trust company. First" Nation al bank of Portland. Ore., In vestors Stock Fund, Norfolk and Western Railroad and U. S. National bank of Port land, Ore. Eliminated The two former members which failed to qualify were Insurance company of North America and First Western Bank and Trust which was partially taken over by the California bank. Hanover bank was eliminated. It con solidated into Manufacturers Trust, creating a new bank ing mammoth - Manufactur ers Hanover Trust - now twelfth largest concern in the country. Although 1961 heard many of the giant industrials com plain about Iheir profit mar gins, it was a higher year for sales and an excellent one for growth of assets - perhaps the truest measure of corpor ate wealth. The 1961 billionaire group, taken as a whole, had com bined assets of $376,779,598, 000 (b) against $344,355,477, 000 (b) in I960 when there were six less members. For almost all the mem bers, assets increased during the year, ranging from slight ly over a billion to more than S24.5 billion for American Telephone and Telegraph company, the world's largest investor-owned company. Declining Assets Assets declined for only five of the U. S. giants: Gen eral Motors acceptance and C1T financial in the finance field. New York Central and I Baltimore and Ohio among j the rails and Philadelphia Na- I tional bank. There was no change of j position among the 10 largest corporations and each one re- i ported an asset increase. They j remained, in order. AT and T, I Metropolitan Life, Prudential j insurance. Bank of America, ; Standard Oil (N.J.). Equitable Lite. Chase Manhattan. First National City. General Mo tors and New York Life. j Foreign corporations arc not included in the roster and ( few would qualify. Only the i British Dutch Royal Dutch' Shell Oil combine and the i Unilever group would rate j places, along with British Pc- j troleum. Imperial Chemical : Industries. British T o b acco, 1 h e Italian Fiat complex. Dutch Philips, electrical equipment manufacturer, and Aluminum limited and Inter national Nickel of Canada.
