OREGON Romney Piling Up Big Margin Over Incumbent Foe By United Prtsi International Republican p r e t i d e n -tial possibility George Rom ney came through his "pop ularity contest" in Michigan with flying colors today. The former auto maker, I running unopposed in the ' GOP gubernatorial primary, : was piling up a big margin - over incumbent Gov. John B. , Swainson, who was unoppos ed i n t h e Democratic p r i -mary. Romney had more than a . 100,000-vote lead over Swain ton. Swainson had held an early margin over Romney, when the votes were in primarily from the Detroit area Tues day. But as o u v - s t a t e pre cincts began to report, Rom ney took a big lead. Although neither man could lose his race, the Michi- : gan popularity race held more interest than other pri mary raies In Kansas and Missouri. First Office Bid Romney, the former presi dent of American Motors Corp., is making his first bid - for major political office. In November, he will be trying to end 14 years of Democra tic control over the gover nor's seat. Republican leaders view Romney as an unknown fac tor, since he has never run . before for major office. Sen. Edward Long swamp ed two opponents in his raca for the Republican renomination. Reedsport Plant To Be Expanded Reedsport- IUPII -The United States Plywood corporation announced today that the com pany will make a substantial addition to its plywood man ufacturing facilities here. Marshall Leeper, Eugene, vice president for western operations, said the addition will involve a lay-up opera lion to supplement the pres ent green veneer production facility. It will have a capaci ty of 80 million square feet. Construction was to begin immediately and be in full operation by July of 1963, Leeper said. He announced at the same time that the company will have to close down its Reeds port sawmill about Aug. 15 for an indefinite period. The closure affects about 18 em ployees, but the new plant will eventually employe 150 people with an annual pay roll of approximately $1 mil lion, he said. The expansion in Reedsport will bring U.S. Plywood's production in Oregon to more than 700 million feet. The firm also operates plants at Eugene, Gold Beach, Mapleton, Roseburg, Willa mina and Lebanon and 'em ploys a total of 3,000 person; in Oregon with an annual payroll of more than $15 million. Protection Of Car Finish Is Desired Racine, Wis.-IUPII-Your car can get "sunburned" in sum mer. Only it won't develop a rosy red hue like its owner. In stead the finish eventually will tend to appear chalky. Specialists in car finishes at S. C. Johnson and Son Inc. here say summer sunlight is a leading cause of "burning" or oxidation of the auto paint "skin." The oxidized paint forms a dull coating that obscures the depth and color of the finish. The specialists said combina tion car cleaners and waxes remove the dead paint and provide needed protection. It is "cabrito." the Spanish word for "little goat." The best goat for barbecuing i. a kid around four months old, dressing out at about 20 pounds. The meat is cooked in a slow oven of masonry or an open pit lined with glowing embers of charcoal, hickory, oak or mesquite. It is basted with lemon juice and a sauce of many variations but which has the basic ingredients of vinegar, tomato sauce, garlic and vegetable oil. After about six hours of cooking, the meat Is well done and tasty.
