WATKINS Regiitti and Tribuna Syndicate 192) Strange As It Seems v "sie hix Radar Reveali Birds Loio i Their Way But So Do Wal Migrating birds have been performing a miracle right in front of our eyes all this time by successfully travel ing over great distances with out man's help, with no In struments, no road maps, no way of inquiring the route. Many theories have been advanced on how they do it. Landmarks, for one. Many f claim birds travel by watch ing for familiar structures, rivers, even buildings along the route, and probably they , do except in the case of young birds making the trip for the first time. They must have a different method which is a little more than just confus ing to us, smart as we are. Some self-styled wise boys t say there is nothing to it. The ! bird just starts out and may make it, but mostly by acci dent or good luck. But now ; we are about to prove it and at the some time learn what all the flying has been about. We'll do it with new ad vanced radar. Electronics is the answer and already we claim to have it about licked. Watched at Night New radar equipment makes it possible to watch even small birds on the screen. The birds can be watched at night, something I students of bird behavior j have never been able to do. Even the bird's speed can be : determined, its elevation or . change of direction. ft was noted and rather gleefully too, by the watch ers at the radar screens, that on dark nights or in stormy weather the birds sometimes became lost or confused; sometimes even wandered far out to sea and away from the coastline they were following. When dawn came many of these migrants relumed to the coast and followed it, as if looking for familiar land marks. Noting the apparent confusion of some of the birds, the radar observers were quick to say, "the mi grating birds are not as bright as many folks have been anxious to believe. What About Us? Hinting that the migrating bird is pretty stupid because it becomes lost or confused on a dark and stormy night is completely and convenient ly Ignoring the very evident fact that many airplanes, large and small, operated by man, who is supposed to have all the answers, smack them-' selves into mountains crash into the sea or become hopelessly lost. Perhaps bird-brains are no more infallible than human brains, except that the bird never belittles those who try to imitate it like the pot calling the kettle black.
