I know I'm i fool for sticking with my wife, but I still love her. Nettie J. He is ready to agree to the most humiliating terms ever heard of Calvin B. I have 23 years of marriage behind me, dur ing 18 of which my wife has been unfaithful to me at var ious times. Time after time, I closed my eyes and pre tended I didn't see, hoping things would improve. In the past five years we ve occu pied separate rooms, and for the last 11 months there have been no marital intimacies between us. About a month ago I pack ed and left. But I was assail ed by the most unbearable grief and loneliness, and I re turned after four days. My wife was colder than ever, and we had a big row. She said if I didn't get out, she would. I told her I still lov ed her and wanted to live with her. Finally she agreed to ftay on two conditions that I never approach her physically, and that I never object to her seeing the other fellow. I said okay, but I know I should get out and divorce her. Nettie J. Did you ever see a grown man lev himself be made such a fool of? Cal is my brother, a sweet fellow and a hard-worker. He sup ports that faithless wife of his end two of the four child ren. Who knows whether they're his or not? The other two kids are married. During the past 18 years I've had to run over and pinch-hit in Cal's home dur ing week ends and holidays when Ada was away. She's had this lover all that time. I urged Cal to do something about such a wicked situa tion. Our friends told him he was a laughingstock among Ada's crowd, and they advis ed him to talk to a lawyer. But that woman carts a spell over him. He just wants to stay married to her under any terms. I can see where it would be a messy matter to start divorce proceedings. T h e other man is married, too. But where Is Cal's pride? Tha Council) Is Cal a man or a mouse? Up to now he appears to be very much of a mouse and no one. except Minnie Moure, would want him around. He's condoning an Intolerable situation. He can't stand living with Ada and looking on while she cheats, and he can't stand leaving her. This mnkes his clinging behavior resemble that of a whipped animal, with no recourse but to stick around for more. No wonder his sifter and his friends have lost patience with Urn, and his wife continues to taunt him. What you call ' love" for your wandering wife, Cal, is merely a compound of habit, fear and cowardice. Your on ly hope now is to be able to take a firm stand and demand that your wife give her mar riage her full attention and try lo restore it. Else she must lose it. You will certainly need outside help to fortify your determination, to help you summon up some rrlf-rcspert and dignity in dealing with your wife. We suggest that you enlist your clergyman or contact a service orgnni zntion such as the Salvation Army or Family Service as. sanation for aid from a mar riace counselor. Y o u must chart your strategy, set up an overdue campaign to sal vage what you can for your self and the children in the form of a decent home and an honorable place in the community. Perhaps Ada is actually waiting or a show of strength from you, Cal. Her contempt rise witli each escapade of hers you permit. Your advis ors may decide that you should leave her flat. At lirst she may not mind your dis appearance. But after a while I she'll see clearly what she s ' left with: a dead relationship j with you. and an ugly affair with a married man. j As to the future, it depend? upon what feelings are left j you after the smoke clears I from your marriagc-m-namc-only. At one time you and Ada loved each other. You say you had five good years together. If she can recognize right from wrong and choose right, and If you choose to forgive, maybe there can he a 25th anniversary still. Oth erwise, accept a clean, swift break and end officially what enrled sloppily 18 year ago. You must decide which is more Intolerable - - life with Ada or life without her.
