Sometimes a 'man with a urinary infection I who has a cystoscope (lighted tube) passed into his bladder jwill later develop a severe ' inflammation o( the lower part of his spine, with tremen- dous backache. j Usually the spinal muscles are tense. The patient, if he is able to walk at all, will walk j gingerly, because each lime he takes a step he gels more I pain and more spasm in his back muscles. The pain often is referred into the abdomen j because it follows long nerves t that come out of the spine and run forward. In many of these ; cases, the diagnosis can be J made by pushing a specially designed needle into a spinal j vertebra or into the tissues alongside of it, and thereby 'getting out some material i which then is examined for ' germs. Rest Prescribed I The treatment in severe 'cases is rest in bed, perhaps for three months or so. Some times the patient should be put in a long plaster cast, ex tending down to his knees. Sometimes the disease and ,11... !.. mer governnu'iit officials have l,,c JU,M IS u vi-nuuiu& .... . i , of the nock, and then a special conceded tliev had improp- ., . . . i collar m.iv have to be worn, er arrannenienls with a m'-Sometimes these nersons ran be helped with strong antibi otics which will kill off the harmful serins. Often an ex act diagnosis is hard to make. The pain of either an infec tion or a tumor of the spine tends lo come on gradually, and once it is established, it does not let up. but is severe, and for a while likely to get worse rather than better. Al though tliis pain may be made worse by movement, it is less l.kely to be relieved by stay ing in bed than t? a pain which is due. let us say, to a ruptured disc. With the infec tion there is likely to be loss of weight, loss of strength, and loss of appetite Ex-Officials Admit Improper Actions Washington -ICPI'- Two fnr- ing firm that prontecl more , than $t million in selling nearly useless chrome ore to I ll.o n-tlintlnl cliw-L-nilp John h. liiikens, Elmhurst, ; 111., former accountant for the j (ieneral Services Administra t ion, admitted at a Senate i hearing that lie had arranged to join the American Chrome Co., of San Francisco, while ; still working for the govern- ; incut. .
