MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON MONDAY. JULY 30. 1962 New York Officials Link Thalidomide To Deformed Babies New York il'PIt New York City health officials said Fri day they had received reports of deformities in at least three babies born to New York women who had obtained the drug thalidomide overseas and taken it during their preg nancies. In Washington, the federal Food and Drug administration Merftber of Famous Circus Family Dies Baraboo, Wis. - lUPH - A member .. of the Ringling Brothers Circus family, Henry Ringling III, 23, was killed early Saturday when his car crashed near here. Ringling, whose grandfa ther was one of the founders of the Ringling Brothers Cir cus, was alone when his sports car went out of control on a rural highway three miles north of Baraboo. said that "up to now" it had no reports of American babies born deformed because their mothers took the defect-causing drug. However, Dr. Harold Jacob ziner, an assistant New York City health commissioner, said the FDA apparently meant that it knew of no cases in which the drug was obtain ed in the United States. Jacobziner pointed out that the cases he had been inform ed of involved thalidomide both produced and purchased WINNIE OKAY London-IUPII-A source close to Sir Winston Churchill Sat urday night said the 87-year-old World War II prime min ister "probably is well enough to leave the hospital but his doctors can make him behave himself there better than at home." , '.here by the American Wom en. I Although widely marketed : in Europe under about a dozen trade names, thalidomide nev 1 er went beyond the clinical i testing stage in this country. Ill has since been withdrawn from the market. Linked to Birlht I Thalidomide has been link led to thousands of births in Europe in which the c, 'dren j had deformed arms or legs, or no limbs at all. The drug and its effects have gained widespread atten tion in recent days as a result of the case of Mrs. Robert L. iFinkbine, a Phoenix, Ariz.. : television personality, who ! has asked that she be permit ,ted to undergo a legal aboi jtion to terminate her three 1 month pregnancy. She look I tlie drug, obtained in Europe. I during the dangerous early 'period of pregnancy. Jacobziner said the cases re ported to him involved twins born to a Great Neck, N.Y., woman, and a New York City woman, whose child was born in a U.S. military hospital in Spain. The Long Island woman had obtained the thalidomide during a West German vaca tion. One of her twins was bum with a deformed leg, the otner was suspected of having internal malformations. Fourth Case Puzzling The mother who gave birth in Spain had taken a Portuguese-made brand of the drug. Both of her child's arms were deformed. Jacobziner said a fourth case, involving a baby born without legs at Mount Sinai hospital here in March, posed a puzzle. The mother reported taking some sleeping pills dur ing pregnancy, but could not identify them. Thalidomide, a tranquilizer, was prescribed in Europe to offset morning sickness in ; pregnancy and to counter in somnia. The only company which distributed the drug in this country was the William S. Merrell Co., Cincinnati, Ohio, and it was sent only to doc tors for scientific research. I ' Up to now we have had no reports of abnormal births at tributable to thalidomide," a jFood and Drug administration j spokesman said in Washing jton. "But we are. double ! checking to make sure that all !of the supply has been return led by the doctors who had j been doing research on it." The spokesman said the agency understood that Mer rell had done a "pretty good job" of getting back the sup plies it had sent to doctors.
