Kdited by by Mrs. Alma Denny. (Copyright by General Features Corp.) Joanna F.-He doesn't have to leave me alone as much as he does. Clarle F-She doesn't have the least concept of what I'm up against. Jaanna F.-I'm 39, Clark is 33 ar.d we've been married seven years. After losing two infants during childbirth, we were able to have two more. They're fine, sturdy toddlers, now, a boy of 3 and a little girl of 18 months. Naturally I don't have an easy time of it, especially at my age. If ever a wife needed her hus band around regularly I do right now. But Clark lives only for his job. He eats it, drinks it, breathes it, dreams it, talks it exclusively. I can be flat on my back with both kids screaming for attention, but one phone call from his office and he's off to New York or Canada. The children barely know him. I tell him he's helling on the wrong horse. He'll regret neglecting us. Clark F.-This comes of mar rying a spoiled darling. Jeanne has never really been out in the world. She went directly from a sheltered life under her father's roof to a brief marriage with a rich playboy. This was annulled and she lived with her indulg ent parents until her marriage to me. I was deceived as to her maturity, despite her be ing older than me. She sulks and pouts like a 4-year-old over things I can't control. A true helpmate would under stand my side of our diffi culties. I gave up college to get an early start on a career with a wonderful corporation which rewards hard work quickly. Although I started as a salesman, I now manage the training department. This takes lots of thought. Since I can't get any work done at home, due to the kids' and Jeanne's fretting, I use the company offices wherever 1 happen to be. Tha Council: Anyone with half an eye can see the trou ble here. But Jeanne and Clark aren't opening that half. They're each too en grossed in their own little bills of complaint to recall that marriage means reaching out to lighten the load and brighten the road for some one else. Clark thinks Jeanne should be content that he's en route toward a higher salary and she should put no roadblocks -like companionship and help -in his way. And Jeanne thinks Clark's life is a snap compared to hers, which is anchoied In the home port by chores, child care and lone liness. At present, home to Clark is somewhere to send his check and then, a place to flee. But since a home is more than a building with front and back lawns, his check is on the way to being marked "insufficient funds," Home is a relationship requiring more than dutiful hellos, good-byes, and letters. And in the guise of "ambitiousncss," a young father like Clark may be burying himself in a frenzy of work to escape from home responsibilities he dreads. He figures, mistakenly of course, that increased dollar earnings will make up for shortchang ing his family in the husband hood and parenthood depart ments. But Jeanne has made the situation worse than it need be by her sandstorm of self pity. True, she's been through a lot. Possibly, in view of her age and child-bearing dif ficulties, she needs more household help and gobs of reassurance as to her attrac tiveness to her husband. The former can be provided by paid houseworkers if not by Clark: the latter must come only from him. Where's her empathy to ward Clark, however? Here's a guy, who competing with college men, feels he must run fast Just to stay in one place. Insecure, he spends nerve-wracking days figuring ways to go beyond the call of duty in order to impress his employers. Jeanne could at least help him do the figur ing at home, by providing a peaceful retreat there at cer tain hours. Here, though, Is our big brainstorm for this pair: Beg, borrow, steal, or hire a baby sitter. Take Jeanne along, Clark, on your next business trip. This will accomplish at least three big things, all good: Jeanne will see for her self what stiff competition you're up against. She'll have a therapeutic respite from child care. And you and she can enjoy a touch of the old togetherness.
