MedfordS&JTribune Eugene -The state of Ore Geology department, has writ which has been designated as as to be accepted as new spe gon has a new mineral named for it-a mineral found in Jose phine county and identified in 1959. Curiously the new mineral, Oregonite, has been named by two German geologists from Heidelberg. Dr. Lloyd Staples, head of the University of Oregon ten of Oregonite in the cur rent issue of Ore Bin, publi cation of the Oregon Depart ment of Geology and Mineral industries. White Material The new mineral a bril liant white material contain ing nickel, iron and arsenic was found by Paul Ramdohr of Heidelberg. It was report ed in a German-language pa per prepared by Ramdohr and Schmitt (1959). Samples of the mineral, taken from Josephine creek by R. E. Morley of Salem, were used in the German study. Mixed with the Ore gonite was a similar mineral mineral "X" because the geol ogists were unable to describe it well enough to set it up as a new species. Hard To Identify Staples noted that Oregon, a state with many beautiful crystals, has named for it a mineral that is not readily identifiable. However, he writes, a few of the 50 states do have minerals named for them. Of the 15 states that do, only four -Alaska, Colo rado, Minnesota and Montana -are the minerals of recog nized species, rather than va rietal names or synonyms. Discovery of new minerals (those so adequately described cies and not previously found anywhere else in the world) has been rare in Oregon. Only eight, including Oregonite, SECTION B MEDFORD, OREGON. The urger was the New York psychiatrist. Dr. Melit ta Schmideberg. She cited several instances of the sci ence of psychiatry stubbing its tots on this very point of common knowledge. One in volved a woman who had seen 20 psychiatrists in 2 years. " She had an unfaithful hus band. That made her dis traught. Her husband said he was not going to allow her jealousy to interfere "with his leading a normal life." Eiohtppn o' the 20 psychia trists considered her paranoid because of this jealousy and some wanted to put her in an institution. Her father brought her to Dr. Schmideberg. saying; "Madame, 1 am a Parisian and know life, but my son-in-law, after behaving as he did, quotes Freud and wants to lock up my daughter, this is too much." Dr. Schmideberg commented thus, "I was lost for a reply." And there was the 15-year-old girl who was sent to her by a social agency after 3 years of "supportive" psychiatric- treatment, continued Dr. Schmideberg in address ing her colleagues through the technical organ of the American Psychiatric associ ation. Acted on Criticism She "looked more like a prostitute of 50" than a child and "she complained of her 'sense of interiority' and that she imagined people stared at her. I told her that this was actually the case, and explain ed why she attracted atten tion and told her how she ought to dress. She took my criticism well and acted on it, and as a result looked bet ter and felt better." And there was a lad of 19 who was referred to her as a "wild-eyed, deluded schizo phrenic." He thought he was "the greatest genius who ever lived," and had been under psychiatric treatment for several years. One phy chiatrirt kepi telling him, "do not doubt yourself." "In contrast," said Dr. Schmideberg, 'I told him his quotations from Dostoevsky were wrong and pointed to other flaws in his knowledge. This brought him down to earth somewhat and enabled me to establish a relationship. Today he has completed his studies very successfully and is happily married." She also cited a young wo man "in an acute anxiety condition." Her po.chiairic advice had been to leave home at 18. She did but it had not lessened her anxiety. "I dwelt on her emotions but high-lighted the fact that she was unable to earn her living and this caused, to quite a degree, her anxiety," said Dr. Schmideberg. "After a few weeks she resentfully stopped treatment, but took a job which she has held ever since." From these examples she drew the conclusion that it was essential in psychiatry "to access and rectify the cause" of quite normal pain ful emotions. The editor of the technical journal put this heading on her admonitions: "Diagnostic Evaluation and Treatment Should Be Within The Context of Life." Summer Reading . Program Plans End The Medford summer read ing program sponsored by the Public Library of Medford and Jackson County will end Thursday, July 19, with a party beginning at 3 p.m. on the library grounds.. AH members who have read 10 books or more have been invited to attend. Omar A. Bacon, head librarian, will present certificates and re freshments will be arranged by the Friends of the Library. Nearly 50 boys and girls have enrolled in the Medford library for the program, "Around the World with Books."
