Hatfield's Career Traced in Literary Magazine Article By A. ROBERT SMITH Mail Tribung Washington Correspondent Washington - ( Special ) - "You know," said Oregon's Gov. Mark Hatfield, "Some one came up to me the other day and asked me when I was going to start c a mpaigning. As though he was saying when are you going to get off your duff? Would you believe it? I've been campaigning for the last 12 years. I've never stopped." This interesting quotation concludes an absorbing pro file of Hatfield in the July is sue of a new quality maga- line, USA-I. It was written ill Smith by Jonathan Rinehart, ex Time magazine writer who is now based in Washington, D. C, for this new literary magazine. In what is the best article yet written about Oregon's young governor, traces his rise to national fame from a collage teacher at Willamette University, shows the influence of his father (who wanted him to be a minister) and his mother (who would have liked him to be a doctor), and charts some of the problems Hatfield faces beyond the state house at Salem. . Also, he doesn't ' overlook the practical role of Hat field's political partner Tra vis Cross, the governor's press relations aide, whom Rine hart rates as "as able and tough a political tactician as the national Republican pa.-- ty has in its ranks." Hatfield and Cross teamed up as stu dents at Stanford in 1948, then came to Willamette to gether and began to build the Hatfield political career. Rinehart I Great Ambition "I always had a great ambi tion for a political career," Hatfield told the author, but after a time at Willamette he came to a point of decision. Rinehart's account of it follows: "Through his father, Hat field had been led to a strong fundamentalist Baptist faith. As dean of students at Wil lamette, since 1950, he had been obliged to recommend expulsion of students for drinking either on or off cam pus - though he was himself was fond of a scotch and soda. After an in tensive period of rededication to his faith, he gave up all drinking and smoking and quit his teaching job as well. "I had reached the point where I had to decide once and for all whether 1 wanted to be in politics, .in teaching or go into the ministry," Hat field recalls. He decided his role was that of the religious man in politics. This background helps to explain one aspect of Republi can Hatfield's political success in Oregon at a time of heavy Democratic voter registration majorities. Reports Rinehart: Aided by Faith "In cold fact, Hatfield's po litical career has been mater ially aided by his faith and by the noticeable vigor with which he pursues it. Oregon's fundamentalists, with their Southern ties, normally tend to vote Democratic, except when Mark Hatfield is In the race. Hatfield is far too canny a politician to be unaware of the political benefits of his faith, but he is equally too sincere on basic issues to be hypocritical on this one. The writer says the possi bility of Hatfield landing on a national GOP ticket depends on his image remaining un tarnished and his rolling up an impressive vote in winning reelection this fall - simply because political convention delegates are most of all im pressed by a winner. His ac complishments as governor have been "creditable but limited." But currently he in working hard with the goal of winning big against At torney General Robert Y.
