Send 35 cents. wealthy Chicago brewer and a New York philanthropist. Brewer Max Henius, born at nearby Aalborg, and Jacob Riis, whose good works won him the titles o "The Good Dane" and "The Good Ameri can," helped buy 450 acre here as a national park that one day each year holds a mass Danish-American combi nation homecoming and July 4 fete. President William Howard Taft championed the idea. In 1912 King Christian X opened the Rebild gathering by lay ing down the law-that every July 4 the '50 acres becomes "a piece of America" for the day. In peacetime the annual celebration has boomed. In war, Danes secretly toastea America. Nazis had overrun Den mark when July 4 came in 1940. But a band of Danes managed to reach the park and run up both the Danish flag and the Stars and Stripes. In the early post-war years the crowds almost blotted out the 450 acres each July 4. The record was 1948's 50,000 Danes and Americans. In dications are that this year the record will be hroken. In every nearby part of Denmark, hotels are booked solid for the 5,000 Americans who are coming by ship and chartered plane along with Nixon, his wife and two daughters. King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid, their acting prime minister and other Dan ish leaders are coming. Frederik wants the fete to be American as possible and banned formal dress for the round of receptions, lunches and dinners. Two special guests will be former Royal Danish Opera singer Johannes Foenss and 80-year-old Casper Hasselriis, chief of the Danish Informa tion Office at New York, who took part in that first get-together in 1912. Undoubtedly the Nixons will be a chief attriction. But the big banquet (smoked sal mon, roast pork, strawberries and cream, etc,) may well be remembered. Acting Prime Minister Jens Otto Krag probably spoke for Danes when he said, the Rebild cele-: bration cements U.S. -Danish friendship and reflects "our common respect for freedom and th estrong desire to de fend genuine human dignity, which time has so often made calls upon." - . .
