JUNE 18, 1962 Portland Child Subject of Search Government Camp, Ore. - (UPC-A 7-year-old Portland boy was missing In heavily tim bered country about 15 miles southeast of here in the Mt. Hood National Forest. Clifford Altman, who was wearing an orange yellow shirt and jeans, vanished from the Bear Paw campground. The campground is located Just off Highway 26 some three miles north of the inter section with state highway 216. Fifteen Wasco county sher iff's deputies and reserves and an equal number of volun teers searched all roads in the area throughout the night and were Joined later by two bloodhounds maintained by a private rescue unit at Madras. The boy is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Altman of Portland. PREPARED Following a very dignified graduation of the kindergarten class at Alta Loma Elementary school in Los Angeles recently, the 74 students showed that they were prepared for the "adult" world of the first grade by doing an adult dance, the Twist. They want to avoid a heart attack. Actu ally, I wish all my worried correspondents could read with me the large literature which shows that experts are far from sure that cholesterol is the main factor which pro duces heart attacks. As my good friend, Dr. Ir vine Page, of Cleveland, who Is a world authority on this subject, recently wrote, some of the other fat-like substanc es in the blood, or fat itself, may be even more important than is cholesterol. Besides, as he said, hundreds of thous ands of people with a decided hardening of their arteries are walking around comfort ably. Certain it is that there are many persons with a low blood cholesterol level who have had a h.-art attack, and there are many persons who have a high blood cholesterol level who wi-l go a long time before they get a heart attack. There must be other factors. A hightly important one is that of heredity. If a man's father, uncle anj older broth er all dropped dead around the age of 42, the man's chances of living lo: are no where near as good as are those of a man whose parents and grandparents and uncles and aunts live-' into their 80's. There is much evidence in the literature to indicate that If a person avoids eating large amounts of animal fats, and uses instead vcgetabl oils, he Is likely to have a lower blood cholesterol level. But, recent ly, the experts at the Ameri can Medical association show ed that if a man wht. usually eats only two or three pats of butter a day changes and eats two or three pats of a ve getable margarine, he won't make much, if any, change in his level of blood cholesterol Also, I wish all those peo ple who are trying to live on a cholesterol-free diet, could read with me a number of au thoritative articles in which able chemists have said that such a diet cannot be counted on to rednre a high level of blood cholesterol. Why? Be cause most of the cholesterol m our blood is formed in our body, and L not taken in with our food. Recently, I was much in terested in the report of a six months' study of 30 men who started with an average blood cholesterol level of 251 milli grams. They took each day an hour of exe cise, and wound up with an average blood cholesterol level of 195 milligrams. A control group of 30 men who ate a similar diet, but did not exercise, had no change in their blood chol esterol. It would seem, then, that Dr. Paul Dudley White, the eminent heart specialist, has been right in urging all of us who worry about blood chol esterol to walk, or to ride a bicycle, as he does. I just read an excellent editorial in the fine medical journal, The New England Journal of Medicine (May 10, 1962). In it, an authority looks over the few drugs that have been used in an effort to lower the level of blood chol esterol. The drug which seems fairly safe, and which, when given in large doses, will somewhat lower the level of blood cholesterol is nicotinic acid. But it has some unpleas ant "side effects." It tends to produce a flushing of the skin with uncomfortable sensations of heat. Also, it is question able if the small amount of reduction in the level of chol esterol usually obse "ed can be of any value to the person. As yet, there is little evidence to prove that it ill stave off hardening of the arteries. Al- the drug can damage the liver. Recently, a way has been found of giving the drug slowly and stea lily, and with this there is less flushing. . Other drugs that tend to re duce blood cholesterol are some new ones related to the thyroid hormone. But, now, it has been found that these drugs can increase the fre- quency and severity of the an ginal pain which goes some times with a nr -rowed coro nary artery, and so they would appear to be far from ideal. A third drug was widely used for a while, but it pro duced so many dangerous side effects that I now hear that the company that produc ed it has withdrawn it from the market. From all this, it appears that the problem of lowering blood cholesterol with drugs has not been entirely solved. Until more facts are learned, about all we can do to avoid hardening and ulceration of the arteries is to stay thin and to avoid fats of animal ori gin. Former Forest Chief Succumbs Portland -(UPI)- Funeral services were held .today for former U. S. Forest Chief Lyle F. Watts of Portland. The 71-year-old Watts, chief forester from 1943 until his retirement in 1952, died of neart aumcnt Saturday at a Portland hospital. He served as a regional for ester from 1936 to 1943. He joined the forest service in 1913. Survivors include his wid ow, Nell, a daughter, June, of Dallas, Ore., and a son, Gordon, with the Forest Serv ice in Washington, D. C.
