Astronaut Aided Alter Gear Trouble Miami -aw- Astronaut Vir gil I. Gus Grissom was helped out of a tight spot Tuesday while piloting a Jet fighter 44.000 feet over Jacksonville, Fla. Grissom, an Air Force cap- r tain, was en route from Pope Field, N.C., to Patrick Air ' Force Base neHr Cape Canav- eral when the navigational equipment on his F106 stop pen functioning. The suborbital spaceman notified Patrick, which in turn called Miami's Air Route Traffic Control Center. The center was able to pick up a radar emergency signal from -Grissom's jot, flying above a - thunderstorm. The Miami center said It directed Grissom safely into ' range of the airbase approach ' control, which guided the as tronaut Into a safe landing at Patrick. Grissom telephoned t h e Miami center when he landed to extend his thanks. "I don't know how I could have gotten down without you," the astronaut said. UNCLAIMED ITEMS .'
