Dr. Ferguson ask ed, "What arc we going to do to help the grandmas and grandpas and poor old Aunt Mary?" In close to a million homes, from coast to coast, there ex ist poor old gentlemen and poor old ladies, clear-headed one moment, foggy the next. They ask their sons and daughters pitifully, "You're not going to have to put me away?" Dr. Ferguson went on to say that the number of the state's cases of senile de mentia is going up by leaps and jumps. "People don't die the way they used to. It's the power of the antibiotics." These drugs keep the old per son from dying quietly with pneumonia when his time comes-pneumonia which Dr. Osier used to call "the old man's friend." "So these poor old people are pouring in on us from their families, who can't stand their bad behavior." (As many a grown person says to me, "At times, my old mother is just naughty, and makes end less trouble for us.") "Others are coming in from the coun ty poor houses. They're ar riving from nurses' homes that can't cope with their in corrigible conduct." Many of these old people will be perfectly sane for a while and then they will be come so confused they will fail to recognize their own son, and will order him out of the house. If the confused grancma's children hire a woman to take care of her, grandma promptly fires her. When the old person's chil dren are poor, the problem of care is big, but even when they are rich, the problem may be almost insoluble. Un fortunately, drugs seldom help any. Loss of Calcium in the Bones Many people write telling me they have been told they have osteoporosis. Usually this is diagnosed by an x-ray specialist (r o e n tg e nologist) who sees that the shadows of the bones are very light due to the lack of lime salts in them. In a few of these cases, the spine will cave in, especially in its upper por tion. Sometimes, an aged person will become somewhat hunch backed, and then he or she may suffer much pain due to the pressure of the caved in vertebras on the nerves that come out from between them. 1 remember a woman of 55 who came to me com plaining bitterly of abdom inal pain which was due to the pressure of her collapsing spine on the nerves that ran down between her ribs to supply the muscles and skin of her abdominal wall. I keep reading that this osteoporosis with caving-in of the spine is due to the loss of a sex hormone. A professor at Harvard wrote a book in which he advised the giving of sex hormones to these peo ple, but I am sorry to say I have not had any success with this treatment. I fear we physicians still do not know enough about the cause of the osteoporosis. I was just reading an article on the amount of lime salts in bones in older people, which suggests that these people might help themselves by drinking at least a glass of milk every day-unless they are allergic to milk. Studies of the diet of older people show that especially when they don't drink milk, they can easily lack sufficient lime in their diet, and this con ceivably can cause trouble in their bones. I have never been con vinced of the sex gland origin of the disease. So often women the caving-iii of the bones of the spine does not take place at the time of the mciiupause when the ovaries shrink up and lose most of their function. I have seen the caving-in take place 10 or 20 or even 30 years later. One of my dear friends, a famous surgeon, suffered serious caving-in of the upper part of his spine-so bad that his head fell forward, so far that he could look only at the floor, and this took place when he was 90. I do hope that research in this field will some day give us more definite information so that we can help these unfortunate people. In the meantime, they might make an effort either to drink milk each day, or take a table spoonful of the Syrup of Cal cium Gluconate. A Suggested Cur For Sleep-Walking Mrs. S. H. Gobay of Jack sonville, Fla., reminds me of an old method of curing sleep walkers which I heard of years ago.
