The U.S. had a corner on the event from 1847 through 1955 but since then has man aged lo win the championship only in 105D when Deane Bc nian defeated Bill Hynriman in an all-American final. An estimated 30 Americans entered this year. Most of them figured their chances of success were low because of the strong winds whistling in from the nearby Irish Sea. The total U.S. listing is vague because several servicemen may have entered through lo cal clubs. Nuxhall, who was recently given his outright release by the Angels, Sunday night picked up his third straight win for the Padres as he help ed them sweep a doublehead cr from Tacoma and move into second place in the PCL standings. Nuxhall spaced eight hits over an 11-inning route in the opener as the Padres won it, 3-2. In the nightcap, John Tsitouris turned in a twe-hit pitching job to pace a 5-0 vic tory. In other PCL baseball ac tion, Salt Lake City defeat ed Hawaii, 1-0, Portland won a pair from Spokane, 6-5 and 8-2 and Seattle divided a doublehoader with Vancou ver. Bill MacLeod's efforts on the mound and at the plate provided the Rainiors with their win. MacLeod pitched an eight-hitter, and hit a dou ble and a single. He scored one run and drove in the other. He was credited with his fifth win against three losses. Vancouver rallied for three runs in the top of the final frame to overcome Se attle in the seven-inning nightcap. Chuck Weather spoon started the rally with a solo homer. Later in the in ning Ron Henry delivered a two-run single. The uprising gave Burt Cucto, the third Vancouver hurlcr, his first win of the season. Hal Jones hit a bases-emp ty homer in the eighth in ning to give Salt Lake its tri umph. Another pair of Baltimore homers by Brooks Robinson and Jackie Brandt made Skinny Brown the winner in the nightcap although he was nicked for two home runs himself by Clcte Boyer. The Cleveland Indians sal vaged the second game of a doubleheadcr, 9-3, after the Boston Red Sox won the 11 inning opener, 4-3; Washing ton swept two games "rom Detroit, 2-1 and 5-4, ar, ! the Los Angeles Angels look a pair from the Kansas City A's, 14-6 and 6-5. The Los Angeles Dodgers widened their National league lead to 2't games by beating the Houston Colts twice, 9-3 and 9-7; the St. Louis Card inals stretched their winning streak to seven games with 0-5 and 13-3 victories over the skidding San Francisco Giants; the Philadelphia Phils won their opener with Cin cinnati. 7-5, but the Reds took the nightcap, 9-2; Pittsburgh swept both ends from Mil waukee, 12-8 and 3-2, while the New York Mels beat the Chicago Cubs, 21, then lost the 10-innlng nightcap. 5-4. Rookie Bob Tillman's 11th Inning homer, his third in as many games and ninth in 24 major league contests, pow ered the Red Sox to victory in the opener, but the Indi ans had an easy time in the nightcap as Barry Lalman hurled an eight-hitter and John Romano, Tlta Franco na and Jerry Kindall each homered. Romano also hom ered in the first game. Don Rudolph's five - hit pitching over the Tigers gave the Senators their first game victory and Ken Retzcr sing led home the winning run in the eighth inning of the night cap after Washington battled back from a 4-1 deficit with the aid of Dale Long's two run homer. Dick Ellsworth's wild pitch in the sixth inning enabled Joe Christopher to score the winning run for the Mels in the opener. The Cubs trailed 4-1 in the eighth inning of the nightcap, but after Ernie Banks' pinch homer with two on and two out tied the score in the ninth, Andre Rodgers doubled home the winning run for the Cubs in the 10th. They split a Saturday night twin bill and divided two more games on Sunday. Wheeler's took the first game on Saturday 6 lo 1 and Randall's the second 1 lo 0 in a no - hitter for pitcher Marion Kraft. Yesterday the Loggers were winners 1 to 0 in the opener. Chuck Wagon grabbed the finale 2 to 1. In the Saturday starter the Loggers smacked five of their seven hits and got all of their runs in a big sixth inning. Jack Dillon collected a two base hit and Bob Smith, Jack Dicr, Don Jacobson and Gary Blair singles. A hit batter, a walk and two errors helped runs around. A base on balls, Don Van Dervort's hit, an error and a wild pitch went into the Sa lem marker in the second stan za. 11 Strikeouts Mcdford's pitcher Vcrn Col lins whiffed 11 batters and walked two in two-hitter. Gene Hilflicker of Randall's walked one, hit one and fan ned six. A single by Glenn Blanton. groundout by John Hoffert and single by Gordy McMor ris manufactured the lone Yankees Sign Condon Hurler Condon -WH- The New York Yankees have signed pitcher ."Cvcrett Brcdimus, who hurled Condon High school to a co-championship in the Oregon Class B high school baseball playoffs this spring. The 18-year-old is sched uled to report to Marian, Ky., of the class D Appalachian league at the end ot this week. Hilflicker chalked up two strikeouts and a walk. Salem came close to scoring In one inning when Don Van Dervort singled and went to second on a passed ball. He made it lo third and tried for home after a Don Dorovich flyoul but was out on a close play at the plate. Dorovich for Randall's and Bill Weddle for Wheelers each homered in the wrap contest. The run that made the difference for the Capital city crew was in the first in ning. Fred Bolton walked. He was sacrificed to second by Blanton and gained third on a Hoffert groundout. An error permitted him to score. Kraft held the Medford club to one hit while striking out three.
