Local and Trash Fir Sawdust and chips of wood along the rail road tracks at McAndrews rd. in Medford caught fire short ly after 1 p.m. Friday. Fire men extinguished the maze. Grass Fires The Central Point Rural Fire department reported two small grass fires in White City Saturday after noon. One was on Avenue G at 3:50 p.m., the other at 3:55 p.m. on Avenue A and the Crater Lake highway. Both were quickly extinguished. Patients Medical patients at Sacred Heart hospital are Mrs. Nelson F. Erin Merkel, public health physician. Thirty-eight cases were re ported in Medford, 27 in Ash land, 26 cases in Central Point, and 1 case in Eagle Point. Friday, Crater Student Tops In Sheep Judging Central Point - Steve Hall, Crater High school, was high est individual contestant in sheep judging at the recent state livestock judging con tests held In Prmevuie. Alan Bray and Dick Fields placed in the top 10 in beef judging. The Redmond chapter placed first in team competi tion and was awarded a steer for their chapter. After the judging at Prine- vilie, the boys went to Ihe Dalies for the junior livestock judging contest. The livestock judging team at The Dalles consisted of Steve Hall, Alan Bray and Terry Bezoff. Crater placed eighth out of 21 chap ters participating in the con test. Inauguration of the newly elected governor will be held in the house of representatives Thursday, June 14, at 1:30 m, Gov. Mark O. Hatfield will be guest speaker. The department said ii was the iirst time since at teast 193S when two months passed and Oregon recorded no pe- aesinaa tatauties. Oregon's last pedestrian fa tality was recorded March S7. meaning that going tats ts- eay the state apparently has not had a pedestrian death Jn 11 days. Ziberttfatonceyu Medford Council Declines to Accept Lighting Cost Proposal The Medford city cauneii Thursday declined to accept a state highway department proposal that Use city st Med ford pay Jor the annual cost ol lighting the two freeway interchanges at the north and south ends of the city. By a 4 to 3 vote, the coun cil overruled a recommenda tion si the administration that the highway department's re quest be accepted. Annual cost ot the lighting wouid have amounted to about $980, City Manager Hobert Dug said. Duff pointed out, in support of the administration's rec ommendation, that Portland and Eugene both pay the cost of lighting highway inter changes within their city lim its. Primarily Lecal Traffic The city manager further explained that he felt the re quest was reasonable since the interchanges would be used primarily by local traffic. He recommended against another highway department request that the city accept the cost of lighting the en tire section of the freeway At the end of the vote, May or John W, Snider toid Use council he felt the matter 'will come up again."
