Ticket sales have been ex ceptionally good and entries are pouring in at a rate which insures a large and talented field. Over 100 schools have entered close to 600 athletes for the national collegiate meet. The host Webfoots, along with defending champion Southern California and East ern powerhouse Villanova, rate as the teams to watch in the battle for national track and field supremacy. Coach Bill Bowerman's Ducks will rely heavily on de fending individual champions Jerry Tarr and Dyrol Burel son and Harry Jerome, run nerup in the 100-yard dash a year ago. Tarr, holder of the Ameri can collegiate record of 13.3, rates as an overwhelming fa vorite in the high hurdles, while Burelson, with a best of 3:57.9 this spring, should cap ture his third consecutive NCAA mile title. Jerome is the key in the dashes for the Ducks. He'll be matched against Villanova's Frank Budd, who captured both he 100 and 220 last year at Philadelphia. A break-through by Jerome would give Oregon a big push in its bid for a first national track championship. USC, which lost to Oregon in dual meet competition this spring, will look to defending shot put champion Dallas Long and star quartermiler Rex Cawley to spark its title defense. Other defending champions expected to be on hand are New Mexico's Adolph Plum mer in the 440, Pat Clohessy of Houston in the three-mile, Dixon Farmer of Occidental in the 440-yard hurdles, John Thomas of Boston U. in the high Jump, and Glenn Passey of Utah State in the discuss.
