Lloyd H. - They should give the spare room to me. Mn. O.H. - We need It for so many other purposes. Lloyd H. - I'm 13 years old and I'm trying to convince my parents that I should have the bedroom that's g'.ing to be empty next month when my grandmother moves out. Right now I share a room with my kid brother. He's 8. My baby brother has a crib in Grandma's room. My idea is for the baby to move into my room with Bud, anfl for me to have a room alone. Bud drives me nuts. Here I'm doing high school work now and he's up there with his friends - wrestling, throw ing shoes around, making barnyard sounds or something equally kooky. I can promise Mom she'll see a big difference in me and my marks. And I'll put my things away and keep the room clean and neat. But she's wriggling out. She says she has other plans. That's ter rible. Mn. O.H. - Of course I sympathize with Lloyd, try ing to do quiet studying with Bud barging around. I keep ' chasing Bud outdoors or shushing him, but an 8-year-old has some rights, too. Thcre'd be no problem If we had five or six bedrooms to hand out. But now that Mother's room will be vacant, we must de cide the best thing to do with it. I may be able to get a col lege girl who'll sleep in with the baby and help me In re turn for room and board. Or, we'd move the baby in our room and turn that one into a den, TV room, playroom or maybe a sewing room for me. We need a guest room, too. We have to give it lots of thought. Lloyd can't expect us to say yes unless it's best for all concerned, not just him. The Council: It's no news, but here's added proof, that many of the world's woes boil down to the lack of le bensraum, and conversely we'd probably all be as hapoy as kings if we had their multi chambered castles to live In. (Come to think of It, there aren't many happy kings-but that's another topic.) Our box-ed-in housing allotments turn modern life into an education in the fine art of getting along with those who step on your loes, crowd your closet, occupy the space you'd like to stretch out in. Lloyd and his family are learning how. But hard as the decision Is, we'll take a deep breath and venture a vote for Llovd. What with hide-a-beds and other trompe - l'oeil tricks, we'll bet Mrs. H. can work out makeshifts to cover some of her other needs. The situa tion will change. The family may move. As of now, how ever, we deem the most worth while use of the empty room would be as sanctuary for this serioua-minded adolescent boy. First, It would inspire neatness and orderliness, and impart an air of tranquillity- all booms in a teen-ager's tur bulent life. Then, it would give Lloyd a quiet perch from which to figure out a few things for himself - where he fits in the world, what his speci! ta.lerl-s and tastes are. Everyone needs a Think Room. People find it in library; an office, a church or a temple. Lloyd will have It at a period when wonderment ami puzzlement assail the growing bey. And of course he'll have good study conditions, a rare and important concomitant of the high school years. So rare indeed is this sort of aid that two Texas psychologists rec ommend that students post rude nigns on their doors say ing "Get Lost" or "Scram Please." Comfort for Mrs. H. comes In the thought that'Lloyd will move out of the room to go to college, and by that time noisy Bud will be the teen-ager who needs a little privacy.
