North Eugene, Gresswell Win A-1, A-2 Track Championships Oregon State University, Corvallis - North Eugene and Cresswell won the champion- ships in their classes here Saturday in an Oregon state high school track meet fea- tunng the greatest half mile race in the state's athletic his- tory. North Highlander, paced by Dave Duebner, who set two new standards, tabulated 44 points to capture the Class1 A-1 trophy. Cresswell, led by one-man gang Denny Ellis, scored 40 points for the Class A-2 hon - ors. Ellis won three events and smashed records in two. Grants Pass, power from southern Oregon, was second in Class A-1 with 39. Corval lis was third with 35, while Hiilsboro scored 30 and Grant of Portland, North Salem and South Eugene tied for fifth with 24 points each. After Cresswell in A-2 came Deedsport with 38. St. Mary's which moved Into A-2 class this year after three consecu tive State B titles captured third with 32. Sierra Catholic scored 23 and Oakridge 22, shading a 2Bi tally by Myr tle Creek. Wins Half-Mil. Duebner won the miracle half-mile in which all six placers bettered the old stand ard. Record time of 1:53.6 beats the record he estab lished in the preliminaries Friday of 1:55.3. In the 220-yard dash Butch Lumby, Grant, tied the standard with his 21.8. The records which fell included Gordon Payne's time of 48.6 for South Eugene for the 440 yard dash; Don Angevinc's six foot, 5;, i inch high jump for Hiilsboro, and South Eugene's relay time of 1:29.2. On the relay quar tet for South Eugene were Tom Lichty, Payne, Jerry Strand, George Hadley. In the high jump, John Franz, of North Eugene also bettered the old standard by one inch. He took second place with 6-4 For Cresswell, Ellis set new records of 19f)-10'7 for the javelin and 52-2 'i in the shotput and he took first place, also, in the discus at 159-4. He was the meet's only triple winner. Doubl. Winners Lumby joined Duebner as a double winner in Class A-1 by taking the 100 yard dash along with the 220. Double winners in A-2 were Doug t Manning, of Yamhill Carlton, in the 100 and 440 and Fair cloth who took the half mile along with the mile. I A champion from south ern Oregon in A-2 was Paul Elliott, of St. Mary's of Med ford, with a victory in the high hurdles and time of 14.8. Grants Pass and St. Mary's topped the southern Oregon performances in the meet. El liott also won third for St. , Mary's in the low hurdles, hitting the next to last hurdle i in the race. Jim Calhoun was i second in the javelin for the j Crusaders with a heave of 188-'2. The St. Mary's relay j team of Tom Darland, Jim 1 Webb, Joe Kaiser and Elliott was second in the relay. Grim had appeared in It games for the Athletics this year, had lost once, and had a 6.23 earned run average. Jones. 32, has a 3-5 record with Portland.
