IMMTaiMMBaBaTaTaTeTTaiiiiMa -ST0BIW1DE Era Candidates Talk Of Home Rule al Chamber Lunch Ashland The proposed Jackson County Home Rule Charter figured prominently in talks by the seven candi dates for county judge here Tuesday. The candidates spoke at the weekly Ashland Cham ber of Commerce luncheon. Earl M. Miller, Republican Incumbent, said that while he did not concur in the charter in its entirety, he thought it was a step in the right direc tion. Homer A. Conger, Republi can, and K. C. Wernmark, Democrat, both attacked the charter. Conger said he was against it, because "the ap pointees will be experts." He charged that experts are ex pensive and usually are from a distance. "I am not an ex pert," he added. Wernmark accused the Charter proponents of using "any tactics they can" in a last-minute effort to get the measure passed. In other matters, John L. Gregory and Ralph A. James both Democrats, said they would take steps to improve the recreational areas of the county and bring in new in dustry. Miller said he felt the coun . ty judge should not concern himself with industry and tourism other than to support chamber of commerce efforts to stimulate the influx of each. He spoke of the numer ous problems in the county's future, including the situation created by rural areas' becom ing urbanized. Harry E. Hawk, Republi can, urged steps to get tour ists to come off the freeway when it is completed and into Ashland and other county cit ies. Evan E. Rasmussen spoke of his background in farming, including serving as vice pres ident of the Talent Irrigation district.
