10 A Pendleton Paper Wins First Place Portland -(UPft- The Pendle ton East Oregonian Wednes day won first place in the 1961 Newspaper Citizen Lead ership contest sponsored by the Consulting Engineers As sociation of Or(on. Editor and Publisher J. W. Forrester Jr. accepted the $150 first prize awarded for dories and editorials to ac quaint Pendleton residents with the need for new swim ming facilities to replace a 40-year-old pool. Second place was awarded to the Lake Oswego Review for its support of expanding ewer systems, better library facilities and an improved wa ter system. The Oregon City Enterprise Courier's campaign to pass a $350,000 bond issue to im prove the sewer system won third place. THURSDAY. MAY 17, 1962 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON Americans Will See Italy's Tunny1 Man By WILLIAM 8UNDERLAND United Praia International Rome - ITJPD - Americans will soon get a chance to see Alberto Sordi, the "funniest man in Italy," in his first English language film. Sordl is a veteran of more than 100 films, many of which have been shown and reshSwn to the delight of Italian audi ences. But most Americans have never even heard his name. The 40-year-old comic, who made his first film at 16, will get his chance in the United States this April when "The Best of Enemies" goes before the American public. In this wartime comedy, Sordi co-stars with David Ni ven. "The Best of Enemies," Sordi'! first English-language film, already has scored a laugh-filled success in Lon don. Off the screen, Sordi, a bachelor, is a serious, intelli gent and articulate man. "The problems of trying to appeal to an international au dience as a comic are tremen dous," he said in an interview. "But I think 'the best of en emies' has shown that I can put myself across in English." Exprtsiion As a comic, Sordi depends more on an expression of the face, a word or a phrase than on slapstick. He specializes in tragi-comic situations. "In every day life there is a combination of both trage dy and comedy, and many times they come together," Sordi said. "These are the parts I want to play. No sit uation comedies, or banging from a 30-story ledge by my fingertips. I want to act what is true to life." An example of such a part is his role in "Everybody Home," a story of the con- fu.ol and bitter days near the end of World War II when both the Germans and the Americans wer shooting at the Italians. Sordi plays a bewildered officer who is caught between the two forc es and has no idea of what to do. Sordi said: "I learned to be a comic the best way - by working with and learning.! from other comics. When I was 13 I won a contest to dub in the Italian voice for Oli ver Hardy in the Laurel and Hardy films. "From there I went to films and later I had a popular ra dio program. But my aim was always to become a film personality." With Follinl Sordi has teamed up with director Federico Fellini who made "La Strada" and La Dolce Vita" for a. num ber of films, all of which have had a tremendous suc cess injj Italy. But the only movie of his that has been shown in the United States wat "The Great War," in which he co-starred with Vit torio Gassman. The fBm and Sordi did not score any great success abroad. "My voice was dubbed in English, and they did it with a sort of Brooklyn accent," Sordi said "It just wasn't fun ny. "I've learned some English now and I'm still studying. With my own voice and ex pression it should go better." Sordi's private life is some what of a mystery, particular ly in a country where the press specializes in reporting every action of its screen idols. , Four years ago he pur chased a villa, complete with swimming pool and 100-seat Rale Reduction Petition Filed Portland - KfS - The Port land Freight Traffic Associa tion has filed a petition with the Interstate Commerce Com mission for suspension of freight reductions on steel. The reductions would be applicable to Seattle and the Puget Sound'area without cor responding reduction in Port land and Spokane. The petition requests the ICC to investigate the propos ed freight rate reduction on steel moving from California and Utah points to the Pacific Northwest. A spokesman for the associ ation said the reduction would put the Portland - Vancouver movie theater. He lives there with two sisters. As to his romantic life, Sor di said: "Sure, I'd like to get married. But I want a WIFE and those are hard to find in the film world." area 9t a competitive disad vantage.
