e 6 A- Mothers Announce Scholarships Oregon State University Mothers' club has announced that 16 tuition scholarships will be given for the 1962-63 school year. This news was brought back by Mrs. H. Chandler Drew, Medford, and , Mrs. R. G. Tabor, Ashland, after attending a meeting of the executive board of the club held in Corvallis. Among the 16 winners are Miss Patricia Thompson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Thompson,. Ashland, and Miss Mimi Jones, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jones, Route 1, Box 358, Tal ent. Miss Thompson is a Jun ior in education and Miss Jones is a junior in home eco nomics. Miss Jones will leave June 22 for Honolulu, Ha waii, where she will be assist ant water front director for a Cirl Scout camp during the summer. Speaker of the executive " board meeting was President James Jensen of OSU. He . spoke of the need of chang ing traditions in order to meet present-day needs of the school. He also stated that there is a need for more stu dents to work towards teach ing on the higher levels since there are inadequate re sources to staff colleges. The club voted In favor of combining the traditional Dads' and Mothers' week ends into a Parents' week end at the university. McLoughlin PTA , Meeting Slated Student skills will be fea tured at the regular meeting of the McLoughlin Parent Teacher association, Thurs day, May 17 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the boys' gymnasium at the school. Displays from the arts and crafts, woodworking shop, science, and geography classes will be set up at the rear of the room. Girls of Miss Ruth Osborn's sewing classes will demonstrate articles they have made in a style show. Re freshments, to be served in the cafeteria after the meet ing, will be prepared and served by members of the homemaklng classes under the direction of Mrs. Mary McKenna. Preceding the program a brief business meeting will be hold, and officers for the 1962-63 year will be installed. New officers are president, Mrs. William G. Travis; vice president, Mrs. Walter Olson; secretary, Arthur Iverson, and treasurer, Mrs. Louise Davis. Installing officer will be Mrs. William Siebert. A i(S iLsutst WEDNESDAY. Legion Auxiliary In Jacksonville Elects Officers Jacksonville - Mrs. Alfred Hancnkrat was elected presi dent of the auxiliary to Cen tennial Post 100, American Legion, at elections hpld Fri day evening in the Commu nity hall. Mrs. Florence Whitely was elected first vice president and Mrs. Paul Bulkin, second vice president. Mrs. Lind Mc Beth, the retiring president, was elected secretary; Miss Twyla Hanenkrat, treasurer; Mrs. Charles P. McBcth, chap lain; Mrs. Russell Berrlman, historian, and Mrs. Robert J. Bohl, sergeant at arms. Installations will be held with the post at Joint cere monies with the Medford Post and auxiliary in the Medford American Legion hall on Sat urday, May 26 at 8 p.m A no host dinner will pre cede the installations at 7 p.m., in North's Chuck V'agon restaurant In Medford. Plans for the department convention to be held in Sea side June 21 through were discussed at the meeting and will be completed at the next meeting on Friday, May 25. PTA Holds Installation . ' Applegate Valley - William Barker was installed presi dent of Ruch Parent-Teacher association at their final meet ing this mohth which includ ed the annual potluck dinner. Mrs. Lewis Buckley was in stalled as vice president; Mrs. Ernest Slalun, secretary; and Mrs. Gary Conrad, treasurer. Mrs. Glen Travis, past pres ident was installing officer. Mrs. Travis also is the new president of McLoughlin Jun ior High PTA, and is past vice president of McLoughlin and of the Jackson County Coun cil of Parent-Teacher associa tions, t Mrs. .Arthur Goss received a pin as retiring chairman at Rucn. The Ruch unit netted $103 from the talent show held recently, which is being used for band instruments and enpes. PTA mothers have Just completed making 30 band capes in the school colors of blue and gold. Mrs. Rupert F. Maddox was chairman of the project with Mrs. Goss as co chairman. A rummBge sale will be the final activity of the group this school term. Returns Hornbrook - Miss Marlene Dringman returned to her home in Ft. Jones, Calif., last week after spending several weeks here with her grand mother, Mrs. Tony Shelley and Mr. Shelley. She at'.ended the local elementary school while here. Coming from Yreka to in stall the officers was Mrs. Edna Barr, district parliamen tarian and state homemaking chairman, who gave a brief speech on the aims of t h e PTA and accomplishments of the national organization. Installed president was Mrs. LaVonne Walters. Oth ers installed were Mrs. Albert Attebery, secretary, Mrs. Dave Titus, treasurer, Mrs. Robert Edmunds, historian, ana Mrs. H. C. Fleming, audi tor. Not at the meeting was Mrs. George Chambers who has been elected vice presi dent. Mrs. Lloyd Wcstby, retiring president after two years, was presented a past president's pin by Mrs. Barr. Mrs. Wal lers was presented the presi dent's pin also by Mrs, Barr. In other business, a letter was rend from Fire Chief Frank Lootcn, thanking the PTA for a donation to the Leon Higlcy fund in lieu of flowers for the Higlcy funeral. According to Mr. Looten, two asbestos fire suits were pur chased through the donations of the Happy Camp people ,o the fund. It was voted to set up a committee of three persons to head the well baby clinic. The grand prize of the low er show was awarded lo Bon nie Simmonds. Making the award was Mrs. C. E. Poli- kowsky, one ol the Judges. The other two judges for the event were Mrs. Clinton Nor- cross of Happy Camp, and Mrs. Fred Krupp of Klamath river. The judges spent the entire afternoon preceding the meeting, selecting first, sec ond, third, fourth and honor able mention prizes in each of the classes of the elemen tary school. AH first prizes were on dis play in the auditorium for the meeting, with the grand pnte selected from these first priies. In the way of announce ments the high school princi pal, James Foolp announced the following activities. May 15, annual Arion Award con cert, and also. May 15, Base ball game, Yreka versus Hap py Camp here, last home game of the season. Mr. Koote also thanked the PTA for the $200 donation toward the purchase of the bleachers for the Athletic field. Mr. Foote also announced that the next immunization clinic will be held here May 24 at 1 p m. Another clinic will probably be held in October, he said for those needing the third polio shot. Guests Attend Session of Club Guests at last Wednesday's meeting of the Townsend club were Mrs. Maude Lynch of Boise, Ida., and Mrs. Edna Evans, Medford, who were brought by Mrs. Eva Wright, Ashland. Mrs. John Backes brought her daughter-in-law, Mrs. James Backes. Three Democratic candi dates spoke lo the group, Charles' Crary, candidate for state representative; K. C. Wernmark, candidate for county judge, and W. E. Mor rison, a write-in candidate tor state senator. All became members of the group. Money derived from dances sponsored by the cljb will be divided equally with all dele gates who will attend the na tional convention of Town send clubs, It was announced. Another dance will be spon sored by the club on May 25. Traditional Tea Held in Ashland Ashland - More than 60 mothers, grandmothers and daughters mingled as guests and hostesses Saturday after noon in Trinity parish hall when Chapter AC, PEO Sis terhood, observed Mother's day. In charge of the program was the chapter president, Miss Florence Allen. Co chairmen were Mrs. Marcus Woods and Mrs. Herbert Lewis. Mrs. Glenn Taylor, a mem ber, and her husband present ed a group of four piano and violin selections appropriate to the day's theme. Miss Tru dee Lewis gave a reading dedicated to mothers and Miss Carol Bjork concluded the program with an original dis sertation in defense of the tall girl. Miss Lewis and Miss BJork are high school forensic team members. Several group games and contests were played before refreshments were served at small tables marked by indi vidual flower corsages. The room was decorated with tall baskets and vases of deep lavender lilacs and white spirea. The annual Mother's day lea is an Ashland traditional social event dating almost to (he chartering of Chapter AC in 1023. the high school for the senior class. Class awards for most par-, ents In attendance were awarded to Mr. Schaefer's eighth grade, and Mrs. Fitz ers' third grade, for the ele mentary school; and the. freshman class of the high school. Pictures Selected At the last meeting of Southern Oregon Society of Artists, Mrs. Mark Young, ar tist of Hilt, Calif., selected paintings to be exhibited at the Public Library of Medford and Jackson County during May and June. Mrs. Young gave helpful criticism of the paintings which were selected. The artist is currently exhibiting her own paintings at Frames, etc., Ashland. OREGON Coming Events Are Announced For Gold Hill Gold Hill - Coming events in Gold Hill were announced during the last meeting of the Woman s Society of Gold Hill Community Methodist church. Men of the ghurch, with the assistance of the Woman's so ciety, will help pay the bal ance due on lots recently pur chased by the church with proceeds raised by a spaghetti supper to be given at the Pat trick Elementary school multi purpose room Saturday, May 19 from 5 until 8 p.m. Donald Meister is chairman. A coffee hour is planned May 27 to honor members of the church choir following the worship hour. At the cof fee hour the secret pals of choir members will be reveal ed and WSCS members will escort their secret choir pal to the refreshment table. The choir will recess for the sum mer after that date. It was announced that the Rev. E. J. Aschenbrenner, superintendent of the Eugene district, will attend the fourth q u a r terly conference and church conference at the Gold H i 1 1 Community Methodist church Monday, May 21 at 7:30 p.m. All members and friends of the church, and other interested persons are asked to attend. The Rev. David Carter, di rector of Wesley Foundation, has reminded the group that members are to serve lunch eon at the Wesley Foundation on Wednesday, May 16 at Southern Oregon college, Ash land. Mrs. Lawrence Smith and Mrs. Melvin Burnett will take charge. Mrs. Thomas Z. Smith re ported on the sub-district seminar that she and other WSCS members attended re cently. It was reported by Mrs. Ferd Jones that several boxes of used greeting cards, scraps of ribbon, wrapping paper and magazines with colorful pictures had been sent to the Fairview Home in Salem. She urged members of the group to continue contributing such items for this purpose. Mrs. Ivan Smith was in charge of the program and worship entitled "Rich To ward God" for the May meet ing of the group. This in cluded the annual pledge serv ice at which time members indicated the amount each in tends to give toward the total Woman's Society budget. Mrs. George Dorman and Mrs. Cassie Johnson served refresh ments. On Campus Ashland - Mr. and Mrs. David Lindsay, 1480 Webster street, were among parents of students who spent Par ents Week end.
