CENTRAL AVE., MEDFORD INSTITUTE OF ESSENflAj, HOUSING PHONE SP 3-8281 Blonde Believer in Physical Fitness Maps Swim New York -WPfr- A pretty, S-foot-9 blonde, who thinks most Americans aren't physi cally fit, leaves for Europe in a few weeks on a swimming expedition to top them all. Mary Margaret Revell, a 24-year-old native of Cali fornia who now lives in De troit, hopes that by the end of the summer her name will have made swimming history. Between the 15th and 20th of this month Miss Revel will leave for Spain where she will attempt to swim the 12-mile-wide Straits of Gibraltar. She then will go to Turkey where she will try to swim the Bosphorus Straits and the Dardenelles. Later in the year she plans to swim the English Channel roundtrip. But before that she has scheduled a 75-mile swim that may take up to 36 hours from Port Huron, Mich., to Detroit. Mary Margaret, who weighs in at 135 pounds and measures 36-24-36, has been swimming since she was three years old. But her long distance swims have come only in the past four years. She has made two long distance swims already this year, but they were not too successful. In January she attempted a 25-mile swim in Lake Meade, Nevada, but had to give up when freezing temperatures and snow paralyzed her face and neck muscles. Just three weeks ago she completed 20 of the 28 miles around Miami Beach, Fla., when she was forced to quit because of an appendicitis attack. Despite these setbacks, Mary Margaret is confident she will be successful this summer. "I just know I'm going to do it," she said in an inter view in New York. "Faith is what really gives me my con fidence." A follower of St. Judge, Miss Revell said "I know I've scheduled a lot and it really frightens me sometimes" but "I have so much faith." But Mary Margaret also has some strong feelings on physical culture. She doesn't think Americans are taking care of themselves and plans to do all she can to convince them to change their bad habits. "I feel very strongly about it," she said. "With all this talk going on about physical fitness in this country there is still not enough being done." I New Horn of Gerald D. & Julia DEVEY Fowler Road White City, Ore. "We are happy to give our vote of thanks to Economy Homes and The Institute of Essen tial Housing for show, ing us how we could get our dream home at a sensible price. We would love to show it to anyone who is think ing about a new home. Stop by anytime." ECONOMY HOUSING ECHO Program A non - smoker who eAs mostly fish and keeps to a rigid diet, Miss Revell spends most of her time Just keeping in shape. She said she tries to average four hours in the water a day or about 25 hours a week. She doesn't go into a crash program to prepare for each long distance swim, instead tries to keep prepared all the time. She said tiiat before a big swim she tries to put on a few extra pounds because she will lose between 5 and 10 pounds in the water. While in the water during a long dis tance swim she eats only tea and honey. When she returns to the United States next October after her attempt to cross the Channel, Mary Margaret said she will devote all her time to trying to convince Ameri cans, especially teen - agers, housewives and elderly per nns, that they must keep physically fit. Gunnar Reveals Two Decisions Salem-OIPIl-State Tax Judge Peter Gunnar has announced the first two decisions to be made on cases filed in the small claims division of his one-man court. The cases were Dorran vs. State Tax Commission and Perkins vs. State Tax Com mission. They involved sim ilar matters and were tried in Pendleton by Gunnar a few weeks ago. In a ruling that affected both cases, Gunnar said that class B common stock of Pen dleton Grain Growers is non taxable in the year of receipt by the taxpayers. He added, however, that some 15-year notes held by the grain grow ers cooperative are taxable at full face value in the year of receipt. The dispute arose out of the distribution by the coop of class B stock and 15-year notes to members. The coop members contend ed that the stock was non taxable and that the notes were taxable only on a dis count basis. The Tax Commis sion held that both were tax able at full face value. Tax court decisions can be appealed to the State Supreme Court.
