' is LBfc 1 1 in irtmi irtoawtoj King and Cout Softball Quartet Meets Wheelers White City Monday EDDIE FEIGNER Softball King Comes Monday Grants Pass Cinder Gang Whips Tornado Toews of Medford Tours Half Mile in Fast Time of 1:56 Four meet records were shattered and two were tied and a Medford school record was set Saturday as the potent Grants Pass Cavemen bludg eoned Medford 101-23 to 20-13 in a track meet in the Climate city. The Cavemen scored first places in 13 of the 14 events. But, the Tornadoes' lone first provided the high point of the meet. Steve Toews, Medford soph, omore, ran the half-mile in 1:56. This was his personal best in competition, a meet record and a Medford school mark. Unless the time was bettered elsewhere this week end, Toews' 880-yard is the fastest in the state this season outside of a relay leg. Going by the April issue of Track and Field, 1:56 is the ninth best prep time in the nation this season and the best performance by a sopho more. Other Marks Other meet marks fell to Grants Pass's Bob Wilson with 14.4 in the high hurdles and Dave Lyons with 4:29.2 In the mile, Gil Smith with Wildcats Take Lead In NW Loop Baseball United Press International Linficld's Wildcats scored 11-10 and 8-1 wins over Lewis and Clark at Portland to take the lead in the Northwest con. ference baseball race Friday. The victories shoved the Wildcats into first place with a 10-1 record and the losses dropped the Pioneers back Into second spot with an 8-3 mark. Willamette defeated Whit man 3-0 and 11-1 at Salem and Pacific and College of Idaho split a doubleheade- at Forest Grove. Pacific won the first game 8-3 and College of Idaho took the second contest 6-4. 19.5 in the low hurdles. Med ford's Dennis Brumback was also timed in 4:29.2 in the mile. He was napped at the finish by Lyons. Dennis Patterson ran the 100-yard dash for GP in meet record equaling time of 10.0 and Gary Van Koten pole vaulted 13 feet to knot an other standard. Mcdford's Scott Eaton ran the high hurdles in his per sonal best time of 14.7 and finished third. Lloyd Hammons vaulted 12 feet 3 inches for the Tornado and did not place as GP swept the event. The Cavemen also took all points in the 100 and 220-yard sprints, the low hur dles, the javelin and the dis cus. GP's LeRoy Montgomery gave Toews a good race in the half. Toews passed him with about 220 yards to go and pulled away at the finish. Montgomery was about .5 of a second back of the Medford ite. Medford was without the services of Jim Hill, the top dash man and broad jumper of the area. Hill pulled a ham string muscle last week end and it is hoped he'll be ready to run in the district meet. Eddie feifner, recognized as the norld's pr.m'ier pitcher in Softball. He is the "King." His recond of 1961 is not avail able but the tabulations through 1960 are impressive enough. They show Feigner with 124 perfect games, 428 no-hit performances and 750 shutouts. Barnstorms The quartet of Softball wizards barnstorms interna tionally and plays nine-man aggregations, beating them with tremendous regularity. King and His Men combines, with Feigner as the thrower, have traveled for 16 years, taking on all challengers. Feigner's record through 1960 also shows that he had pitched to 3,902 batters blind folded and had fanned 3,154 of them. His career strikeout total after that season was 38.249. He had won 2,035 of 2,265 games pitched and had tied 34. Other members of the court are Mike Meilicke, catcher; Al Jackson, first baseman, and Jerry Jones, shortstop. Mei- j licke, the home run hitter of j the club rejoined the team last year after residingat Ashland two years. He is a logger in the off season. He played for John Wheeler's, Yreka, Calif, team. " One Easterner Jackson, from Pawtucket, R.I., is the only easterner on the team. He has played serv ice baseball and basketball and briefly was a Cincinnati Redleg farm hand. He and his father own a restaurant Jones, like Feigner, was born at Walla Walla. Wash. He is an all-around athlete. In the off season he is a draftsman for the Corps of Army Engi neers. King and His Men had its beginning back in 1946 when Feigner's Walla Walla team met a challenge at Pendleton by playing with four men. The pitcher and Meilicke were members of that quartet. The four-man team won 7 to 0. Since 1951 the King and his men have played without substitutes. Feigner does all the pitching, sometimes throwing twice a day. Crater Lions club is spon sor. The parochial school Cru saders captured first places in four events and ran up 107 25 points. Rogue River was second with 88 15 and Lakevicw third with 79. Phoenix scored 72 15, Eagle Point 64, Hen ley 1815 and Illinois Valley 5. Two records fell In the meet, both to Paul Elliott, St. Mary's hurdle star. He ran over the high barriers in 14.95 and over the lows in 20.4. Bar ry Frantz, Rogue River, was the meet's only other double winner. He legged to firsts in the 440-yard and 220 races and anchored the Chieftains to their third first place, in the relay. The meet also served as the southern division meet to qualify runners, jumpers and throwers for the full District 6 A-2 meet. This district event next Saturday will be staged, as was the Rogue affair yes terday, on the Southern Ore gon college oval here. St. Mary's garnered 11 dis trict berths, Rogue River nine, Lakevicw eight erf. Eagle Point six and Hen ley one. First three places in each event qualified. , Other St. Mary's victors were Allen Wruck in the mile and Tom Rouhicr in the half mile. Lew Whipple won the high jump for Eagle Point and Darrcll Stock the discus. Rickey Richcy was victor in the Javelin for Phoenix. John Granby took the shot put for the Pirates and Ron Williams tied for first with Tom An acker, Lakeview, in the pole vault. Charles Cosscy won the broad jump for Lakeview and Jim Griener the 100. Butte Falls will encounter Jay Allen company at 6:45 p.m. at Cheney field and Cen tral Point Merchants will op pose John Wheeler Logging at 8:15 p.m. Games are also set for Wednesday, Thursday and Fri day. Communication Workers of America will face Tru Mix Concrete in the early Wednes day mix and Grants Pass will follow against Sam Jennings company. On Thursday Inter national Harvester will take on Medford Merchants and Keith Schultz Garage will en counter the Mail Tribune. Friday slate lists Wheeler against Butte Falls and Jay Allen against Keith Schultz. There are 12 teams In the league. They will play one time around. The league will be divided into two circuits of six teams each. All games have been sched uled for Cheney field at the south edge of Medford. Palmer Leads Colonial Golf Fort Worth. Tex.-fflPD- Ar nold Palmer, golf's reigning I king, broke the monotony of eight successive pars with a string of three birdies to charge back into the lead in the third round of the Colo nial National Invitation Golf Tournament Saturday. Palmer, who ha flounder ed on the back nine of Colo nial Club's demanding 7,112 yard course In the first two rounds, conquered It in fine fashion Saturday with a 34 32 66 and a five-under-par three round total of 205. While Palmer surged to the front, second day leader Gary Player and another ov erseas challenger, Bruce Crampton, stumbled on the back side and wound up the day three strokes behind the onrushing Palmer. Crampton, a 26-year-old for mer Australian Open cham pion, had the day's hottest round working until his sec ond shot on No. 18 slid off into casual water at the side of the green and he wound up with a double bogey 6 and a 33-3467 for 208.
