Tours Half Mile in
Fast Time of 1:56
Four meet records were
shattered and two were tied
and a Medford school record
was set Saturday as the potent
Grants Pass Cavemen bludg
eoned Medford 101-23 to
20-13 in a track meet in the
Climate city.
The Cavemen scored first
places in 13 of the 14 events.
But, the Tornadoes' lone first
provided the high point of
the meet.
Steve Toews, Medford soph,
omore, ran the half-mile in
1:56. This was his personal
best in competition, a meet
record and a Medford school
mark. Unless the time was
bettered elsewhere this week
end, Toews' 880-yard is the
fastest in the state this season
outside of a relay leg.
Going by the April issue of
Track and Field, 1:56 is the
ninth best prep time in the
nation this season and the
best performance by a sopho
more. Other Marks
Other meet marks fell to
Grants Pass's Bob Wilson
with 14.4 in the high hurdles
and Dave Lyons with 4:29.2

Wildcats Take Lead
In NW Loop Baseball
United Press International
Linficld's Wildcats scored
11-10 and 8-1 wins over Lewis
and Clark at Portland to take
the lead in the Northwest con.
ference baseball race Friday.
The victories shoved the
Wildcats into first place with
a 10-1 record and the losses
dropped the Pioneers back
Into second spot with an 8-3
mark.
Willamette defeated Whit
man 3-0 and 11-1 at Salem and
Pacific and College of Idaho
split a doubleheade- at Forest
Grove. Pacific won the first
game 8-3 and College of Idaho
took the second contest 6-4.
19.5 in the low hurdles. Med
ford's Dennis Brumback was
also timed in 4:29.2 in the
mile. He was napped at the
finish by Lyons.
Dennis Patterson ran the
100-yard dash for GP in meet
record equaling time of 10.0
and Gary Van Koten pole
vaulted 13 feet to knot an
other standard.
Mcdford's Scott Eaton ran
the high hurdles in his per
sonal best time of 14.7 and
finished third.
Lloyd Hammons vaulted 12
feet 3 inches for the Tornado
and did not place as GP swept
the event. The Cavemen also
took all points in the 100 and
220-yard sprints, the low hur
dles, the javelin and the dis
cus. GP's LeRoy Montgomery
gave Toews a good race in
the half. Toews passed him
with about 220 yards to go
and pulled away at the finish.
Montgomery was about .5 of
a second back of the Medford
ite. Medford was without the
services of Jim Hill, the top
dash man and broad jumper
of the area. Hill pulled a ham
string muscle last week end
and it is hoped he'll be ready
to run in the district meet.
