ARTHUR WHITING Seminary Dean Bible Conference Set at 1st Baptist A week-long Bible confer ence will be held at the Firt Baptist church, North Cen- tral ave., at Fifth it' Med. ford beginning Sunday morn ing. Speaker for the conference will be Dr. Arthur Whiting, Portland, dean and professor 01 uiDie at the Weitern Con. servative Baptist seminary Dr. Whiting, born In England, come 10 me united states In 1927 and received hia doctor of theology degree at Dallas Theological seminary. He has served as professor at the Philadelphia Bible institute end at the Los Angeles Bible institute before going to Port- iano. nt nas also pastored churches, including the First Baptist church of New York City. Dr. Whiting will speak each evening at 7:30 p.m. in the First Baptist church. There will be music at the services and a nursery will be pro vided. Sunday morning the girls' trio with Virginia Oandt, Lin da Scott, and Beth Wilcox will sing for the service. At the Sunday School hour, rec ognition w ill be given to 'the mothers of the church. The mother of the year will be selected and honored at thii time. The pastor of the church, the Rev. B. E. Andrews, an nounced that May 20 will be "Homecoming Sunday" and will be the last service to be held in the church building. The church has been sold and will be demolished to make way for a Park and Shoo lot. The church will meet in the Wilson school at Grand and Corona aves. while a new building is under construc tion at Crater Lake ave, near Stevens it. Spring Convention Scheduled Here The annual spring conven tion of the Willamette Val ley Advent Christian confer ence is being held at the First Advent Chriirtlan church to day, Saturday, and Sunday. There will be services this evening at 7:30 o'clock and Saturday at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. yhich are open to the public. Saturday at 10 a.m. the conference official board will hold its quarterly meeting. The Rev. Fred O. Sapp Jr., conference president and pas tor of the local church, will officiate.' Sunday morning Mother's day will be observed in the Sund.iy school. Plants will be given to the oldest mother, the youngest mother, the new est mother and the mother with the most children In Sunday school. The Penny Crusade banks will be return ed again to report on Mr. Penny's progress to the mis sion field. At 11:30 a.m. the children will go to their Junior Church chapel where they will have a film and then present the gifts they have made to their mothers. The church plans to move into the buildings on this property about the middle of June. Sunday, Pastor Bruce Rog ers will speak at the 11 a.m. worship service on the sub ject, "A Personal Check-up." The Scripture portion will be Ephestans 4:17-32. Mrs. Helen Merrlman will sing "I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say." Christian Home Festival Observed The Congregational church, 2100 Oakwood dr., will ob serve the Festival of the Christian Home Sunday at its 11 a.m. service. The Rev. Robert W. Tull, minister of the church, will preach a sermon entitled: "The Home as a Foretaste of the Kingdom." Clarence Mil ler will be the soloist for the service, with the choir offer ing responses. The children of the church school in grades one through eight will attend the opening portion of the service, during which Mr. Tull will preach a children's sermon. They will then be dismissed to their classes for the remainder of the hour. The nursery and kindergarten classes will meet and child care for children under three will be provided in Pilgrim house from 11 to 12 noon. Missionary Convention The third annual mission ary convention for First As sembly of God will get under way Friday, May 18. The Her man V. Engelgau family, Ore gon missionaries to Upper Volta, French West Africa, for the past ten years will speak at the 7:30 p.m. Friday service and will show pictures taken of Upper Volta. Mr. and Mrs. Engelgau and their two children will speak at both Sunday services, May 20. These missionaries will be returning to Upper Volta in July, 1962. The missionary convention will feature a Speed-the-Light rally on Saturday, May 19, at 7:30 p.m. The rally will be under the direction of the Rev, Marlon F. Ravan, Ore gon director of youth and Christian Education for As semblies of God. Guest speak er will be the Rev. Paul Pipkin, who currently is the promotional director for As semblies of God Asia mission ary radio crusade. Mr. Pipkin formerly was in China with Youth for Christ and com pleted missionary assignments in Korea, Formosa, the Philip pines, Hong Kong and Japan. Fredrick Ross Evans will preach at both services at the First Christian church on Sunday morning. At the first service the youth choir will sing "When There is Love At Home." Sanner, pastor of the First Church of the Nazarene, 520 North Holly St., will give a series of messages in both ihe morning and evening services. His 11 a.m. subjects will consider the general theme, "My Kind of Church." This will include signs of the New Testament church. In the 7 p.m. service he will have the theme, "Pills And Or Prom ises." Music' for the 11 a.m. serv ice will be furnished by the sanctuary choir and a num ber by the male quartet. MCDFORD, OREGON Faith in God To Be Unity Theme During Month Faith in God as the source of Instant, abundant supply keynotes the May series of sermons on the building of a prosperity consciousness, planned by the Rev. Kathar ine Bosworth for her ministry of Unity Church of Medford. The sermon Sunday takes as its topic "Mother of All Liv ing," with the text from Genesis 3:20. The 11:15 a.m. worship hour at Unity church is preceded by a quarter hour of medita tion and music. The church is located at the corner of Holly and Haven sts. Tonight Men of Unity hold their monthly potluck supper meeting at 6:30 o'clock to be followed by music, singing and a discussion on prosper ity. For this occasion their wives and other women of the church are invited. Young mothers in the church today held their sec- ond of four Friday sessions this month at the Unity cen ter, 995 South Oakdale ave.. dealing with the application of Truth principles in parent- child relationships and using the text book "You and Your Child" by Zella Walters. Weekly adult classes meet ing at Grants Pass, Medford and Ashland began spring study assignments this week in the book "Great Phy sician," by Ernest Wilson, who first released the six-lesson issue as "Master Class Lessons." The Unity church at Med ford functions under the spiritual training program emanating from the Unity School of Christianity at Lee's Summit, Mo. Work Under Way On New Building The Rev. G. O. Skaar, pas tor of First Southern Baptist church, has chosen for his sermon subject Sunday morn ing "Gods Plan for Man's Life." The adult choir will sing under the direction of Dennis Sampels. Training Union classes will convene at 6:30 p.m. followed by the evening worship hour wnen Mr. Skaar will speak on "Citizens of God's Kingdom." A continued increase in at tendance at Training Union classes has been noted the last few weeks by Harvey Hunt. director. Topic for the adult discussions Sunday will be "What God Hath Joined" and has to do with the growing divorce rate in the country -its causes and possible reme dies. Work on the new educa tional building is progressing. About 3,000 feet of addition al floor space will be added, when completed, to the pres ent capacity. It will include two department assembly rooms, nine class rooms, addi tional office space, a multiple social and recreational activ- ity room as well as kitchen fa cilities and additional rest rooms. Meet in New Chureh Sunday Ashland-For the first time in 83 years there will be no Sunday morning service in the Presbyterian church at the corner of Helman and Main sts. The old bell that has called worshipers to the frame building near the down town plaza will be silent. In stead, the doors of a new church will be open, The contemporary style sanctuary and adjoining edu cational buildings have been erected on a 2 'i -acre site at the corner of Siskiyou blvd, and Walker ave. The archi tects, Edson and Pappas of Medford, took full advantage of the tree covered corner in their plans, and the land, scape architect, C. E. Corry Ashland, has developed sur roundings indigeous to southern Oregon The steep roofed sanctuary with a seating capacity of 300 Is connected to the lower buildings by covered walk ways. All are constructed en tirely of native regional ma terials. Included in the educational-administration group are a kindergarten, nursery, parlor and kitchenette with fireplace, the pastor's study with fireplace, an office and various smaller storage and rest room facilities. Emphasis on space and sym bolism is evident in the high- ceiling and the cedar panel ing of the sanctury. The wide center aisle leads to the raised chancel and communion table. Confirmation Day Planned Sunday Mother's day will also be celebrated as Confirmation day at St. Peter's Lutheran church, 1020 East Main st. Seventeen or eighteen mem bers of the children's con firmation . class and of the current adult membership class will be accepted as com municant members of the con gregation in the 11 a.m. serv ice. The Rev. John4 E. Simon, pastor, will have a sermon in keeping with the 'Occasion, and- the choir, under the di rection of Albert Huntemann, will' sing "Let Me be Thine Forever, Thou Faithful God and Lord." The early service will be gin at the usual time, 8:15 a.m. withthe sermon by the pastor. Sunday school for all age-groups follows at 9:30 a.m. The Walther League meets Sunday at 7 p.m. The newly-elected officers of this youth organization will be in stalled by Pastor Simon. Mr. Simon plans to attend the Southern Oregon circuit pastoral conference at Klam- math Falls on Monday. He is counselor of the circuit. Business on the agenda will be the discussion of some of the many resolutions to be considered by the delegates of the national convention of The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod at Cleveland in July. One of these is the proposed new seminary for the denomination in the San Francisco area. Friday, May 18, Mrs. Emil Tarns, kindergarten teacher at St. Peter's church, will present her little pupils in a program in the basement au ditorium of the church. Delegation To Attend State Annual Meeting A delegation from the Med ford Congregational church will attend the 114th annual meeting of the Congregational Conference of Oregon as it meets at the First Congrega tional church. Forest Grove, May 14 through 16. The local church's delegation will con sist of two lay people, Mrs. Carlton Elhart and Mrs. Judd Greenman, and the minister of the church, the Rev. Robert W. Tull. The ministers and lay dele gates from the more than 40 Congregational churches of Oregon will spend three days at Forest Grove considering the work of the state confer ence. Lutheran Minister To Return Saturday The Rev. H. C. Coovert, minister of Zion Lutheran church. Fourth St. and Oak dale ave., will speak Sunday at the 11 a.m. service on 'Mother." The senior choir will sing "In Heaven Above" and the junior choir "He First Loved Me." Narrow windows and cler estory lighting are used along the side walls and above the chancel. A huge cross Is form ed by a shaft and a beam Pews and cushions in a soft gold match the floor-to-ceil ing curtains behind the choir and the aisles are carpeted in wood tones. The entrance narthex leads to a balcony section at the rear of the church, while a front side entrance gives ac cess to the choir room. Ground for the $128,000 construction project was bro ken in June, 1961 after a planning period of several years. Much labor has been donated by members and many memorials have been given. Included are pews, Roman Catholics Set Date of Annual Vacation School June 11 has been set as the opening date for the annual religious vacation school for Roman Catholf" children not enrolled in the local paroch ial school, according to an announcement by the Very Rev. Carl Mai. Classes will be held each morning, Monday . through Friday, for a two week pe riod, ending June 22. All Catholic children attending public schools in the Medford area, grades one through eight, are expected to take part in these religious train ing sessions, Father Mai said. Children not of the Catholic faith are welcome to enroll in the classes also. A project of the Confra ternity of Christian Doctrine, the vacation school Is con sidered an essential supple ment to the rc'iar Saturday catechism classes conducted each week d 'ng the school year. Teachers are lay mem bers of the CCD, assisted and advised by sir--s from the St. Mary schools. Others help ing with the program are Sodalists of St. Mary High school and CCD Helpers com mittee members who make teaching aids and provide transportation for teachers and students. This year's chairman of teachers is Mrs. LeRoy Stuart. Fellowship Supper Planned in Talent Talent- The fellowship sup per for May will be held to night by the congregation of the Talent Methodist church in the annex. The event will start at 6:30 o'clock and its theme will be "Family Living. Dr. Loren Messenger will show pictures, featuring some of the children at Sunday school which he has taken during the past several years. The supper will be potluck. It was on Aug. 28, 117$ that 22 charter members met to form the Ashland Presby terian church under the min istry of Father Moses Wife liams, who had held services in southern Oregon settle ments since 1857. He conduct ed Sunday morning meetings in the Dunn school house er in the Dunn home on NelU creek, and continued as pastor until 1877 when the Rev. S. B. Donaldson arrived front the east and began his minis try in the old south school. The original church bulW ing was erected on the pres ent North Main st. site in 117 at a cost of $2,500. Many ad ditions have been added dur ing the years. Until they are sold the building and manse will be used for some of th church school meetings and other church group activities. Congregational ':: Church Buys Lot The Medford Congrega tional church, 2100 Oakwood dr., has purchased property at the corner of Jackson . st. and Berkeley Way. George Weir, chairman of the church's board of trustees, haa announced the acquisition of the three acre tract on which the church plans to build new facilities within the next twe years. ", The church has been con sidering the purchase of a new building site since last fall. Weir said, and On Mareh 20, the membership approved and accepted the recommen dation of the building com mittee. The property on Jack son st. is just two blocks east of Hedrick Junior H 1 1 h school. Plans for the erection dt new worship and educational facilities are under way. Weir said. The building committee, with Gatewood G. Smith as chairman, is now discussing design with architects. The Building Fund Canvass com mittee, under the leadership of Dr. M. Donald McOeary, ia making arrangements for a capital funds canvass of the membership early in October. It is expected the protect will start within a year and be completed by the end of 1HB3. .
