MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORO. OREGON JRSDAY. MAY 10. 1962 Mobile Fishing Fraternity New Nomad of Sports Br DICK DEW Bourne, Mass.-IUPD-The new nomad of the sports world is the mobil fishing fraternity, an expanding, dedicated band of shoreline gypsies who sel dom stray in season from the sound of the surf. There was a time when Daddy announced "I'm going fishing," the kids kissed him goodbye and Mom got ready for a long summer of mowing the lawn. Today when Dad hears the striped bass are running, everybody in the family starts I packing and damn the dande- i lions. The fisher clan spend their winters building every con ceivable comfort into an end less variety of vehicles known as beach buggies. The stripers begin "hitting" for the surf fishermen along historic Cape Cod about the last weekend in April. In their "season," which often runs into November, multi plying numbers of surf fisher men are taking their families along in the sand riding buggies. Stoves, foam rubber bunks, refrigerators, even curtains on the windows, make for the homey touch. Patsy Diana of Framing ham, Mass.. president of the Suburban Sea and Surf club, typifies the dedication of the beach-buggiest. , "Most of our members in j Massachusetts, Rhode Island i and Connecticut take off the j first weekend they hear the striped bass are hitting. After that, they spend every week-; end and all their vacations , living with the family in the ! beach buggies. That way, we j can fish and not neglect our ' families. "It really is an inexpensive vacation and the incurable surf fisherman gets in all the casting he wants. It's in our bylaws that we must comply with all local laws. For ex ample, we never stop over in towns where you can't sleep on the beach." Perhaps the strangest thing about beach buggiests is the friendship of the postman parked next to the business tycoon who lives on his route. The bank president is liable to sleep 16 feet away from his most delinquent mortgagee. At one time", beach buggy associations were made up of owners of the nearly extinct Model "A" and a few four wheel drive Jeeps. But a Worcester, Mass., j resident named Bob Williams is credited with determining i that relatively conventional two-wheel drive vehicles, with proper weight distribu tion, would plow through sandy areas. Another Worcester m a n, j newspaper outdoor sports editor, Frank Woolnes, formed the Massachusetts Beach Buggy association. Ted Mitten of Weymouth is presi-, dent of the organization which numbers 1,500 mem-; bers. i Today, the true do-it-your-1 self beach buggiest hunts : high and low for an old milk or bakery truck. Addition of a fourth forward speed and fitting out of the rear of the ! truck comes next. Then, it's off to the shore j with Mom. the kids, even the i family cat. 4-H News Sawing Susans, Culinary The Applegate Sewing Su sans and Culinary Cutics 4-H club gave a Motncr s lea re-. cently at the Applegate school cafeteria. j trnu MnK ffavA a model meeting.
