9 o Deaths of Men Connected With Estes Case Being Studied Washington - HOT - Congre lional investigator! are look ing into the deaths of two Texans who had contacts with Billie Sol Estes and his vast farm and financial operations. The Investigators are not satisfied with local decisions on the deaths. One was ruled a suicide and the other from heart disease. A source on the Senate in estigatlng subcommittee under Sen. John L. McClellan (D Ark.) confirmed an inquiry was under way in the deaths of Henry Marshall and George A. Krutilek. Marshall, an Agriculture Department official, was found dead June 3, 1961, from five bullet wounds from a rifle that had to be pumped each time it was fired. The body lay near Marshall's pick up truck in a field near his Franklin, Tex., home. The death was called a suicide. Marshall heseied the Texas Agriculture Stabilization Service, which approved the arrangements which Estes al legedly used to get around the law prohibiting the sale of cotton allotments. Agriculture Secretary Or ville L. Freeman said Mar shall was the key man in the department's investigation of Estes. , The other death of El Paso accountant George A. Kruti. lek - is almost equally mysterious. Krutilek was an accountant for several large landholders and farmers in the Pecos, Tex., area who had dealings with Estes. His body was found April 4 in a car near Clint, Tex. Congressional investigators have not completed their in-' quiries, and are unable at this time to conclude whether Kru. tilck might have been able to shed any light on the Estes affair if he had lived. But they are curious enough about the circum stances surrounding the death to look Into it thoroughly. Officially, pathologist Fred Bornstcin ruled April 9 that Krutilek died of heart disease and thcp was nothing to in dicate any violence. But, Bornstein added, the body had deteriorated so badly that a definite autopsy was impossible. Sources said Tuesday that j two former Agriculture De partment officials are under investigation in connection with the Estes case. ! Sources said the Senate in ! vestigating subcommittee and ; the House government opera j tions subcommittee both are j looking into possible relation ships between the two offi cials and Estes Enterprises. Both men denied they had 'anything to do with matters pertaining to Estes while they were in government. I They were identified by 'congressional sources as James A. McConnell, now liv ing at Mansfield, Pa., and (Walter C. Bcrger, Baltifore, Md. McConnell was an as sistant secretary of agricul ture in the Eisenhower ad-, ministration and later a con-; sultant to former Secretary ! Ezra T. Benson. j Berger headed the depart-' ment's Commodity Stabiliza tion Service office until the Kennedy administration came in.
