You might overlook the mistake a few times, but af ter so long a time, it would begin to get on your nerves. Right? C o n s i dcr then, Dr. Leo nard Carmichael, the tall, dis tinguished head of the Smith sonian institution. For years, he has had to listen to people call his domain by the wrong name. For some reason, nearly ev eryone calls it the Smithson ian "Institute." Even those who should know better make the error. I don't see how Carmichael' has managed to maintain his equanimity. If I were in his shoes, I would long ago have cracked under the strain and attacked someone with a stuf fed owl, or whatever museum piece was handy. Made of Sterner Slulf Fortunately, however, Car michael is made of sterner stuff, as witness the control he exhibited during a double header ceremony at the Smith sonian. At one of the rites, Car michael accepted for the mu heum's permanent collection a rare 13-volume set of the first edition of the encyclo pedia Americana, published In 1829. After this ceremony, Car Michael went immediately to another building to accept a' plaque presented to the Smith sonian by a trade organization. Caught Hn Breath When I saw the name of the donating group, I caught my breath. It was the Ameri can Bicycle Institute. I figured its officials would mislabel the Smithsonian from force of habit. Strangely enough, they all got the name right. It was a guest speaker. Dr. Carl A. Troester of the American As sociation of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, who made the slip. Carmichael let it pass, but if this sort of thing keeps up I doubt that even riding a bi cycle will keep the tension! from getting him. I There is only one way 1 1 Four Men Appear In Circuit Court Four men were arraigned in Jackson county circuit court Tuesday. John' Self, Seattle, Wash., pleaded innocent to charges I of obtaining property by false i pretense?. His trial was set 1 for June 4. The charge in- volves a check passed in Med-1 ford last December. Edgar Clay Howard Jr.. 18, of California, was placed on-, probation on chaiges of bur glary not in a dwelling. He had pleaded guilty to the charge. He was charged with entering a Medford market Feb. 20. Robert Jean Watkins. 33,. of 414 Haven St., Medford.1 was placed on probation and imposition of sentence sus pended for five years on Charges of making a false statement in writing. Earl Bruce Stewart. 22. of j 892 West 11th St.. Medford, pleaded innocent to charges of burglary not in a dwelling. In a speech in Washington Monday President Kennedy renewed his plea for coop eration between buiineii and goTernment. United Press International inter viewed businessmen across the country, and the follow ing dispatch gives a cross section of the opinion of the business community. By HARRY FERGUSON Washington-IUPD-Most of the businessmen interviewed in a spot check across the country PsT s a 1 d today ( they consider ed the Jscnne- m dy Admi n i s- tlon to be un f r i e n dly to ward them. All who held that view pre dieted rela tions between H.rry Feruon govern m e n i and business would gel worse. President Kennedy made a speech Monday to the 50th an nual meeting of the United States Chamber of Commerce. It was his first appearance be fore a business 'organization since, his knockdown fight with the major steel compa nies. The tone of the speech was conciliatory. He asked for a better understanding be tween government and busi ness and, obviously referring to the steel crisis, said the government did not want to take on the "added burden" of having to set prices on individual products. Nobody rose up in the audi ence to grasp the olive branch of peace from the President. The olive tree ttirives best in a warm, friendly climate and there was a touch of frost in Constitution Hall. After Kennedy departed Richard Wagner of Chicago, president of the Chamber, made a specrh in which he said a build-up of power in the executive branch of any government ultimately leads to tile police state. One thread that ran through ,jlie conversation of delegates .ter the meeting was recess ed was that they were waiting with interest the administra tion's attitude toward a big labor union that would insist on a wage increase. Two Questions United Prca International reporters across the country put two questions to business men: 1. Do you consider the Ken nedy Administration friendly or unfriendly and why? 2. Do you believe the rela tionship between business and government will get better or worse and why; No businessman or group of men Van speak for everybody and in no sense should the answers that follow be con sidered a scientific opinion poll. Heads of many-including some of the country's big-gest-for one reason .or an other, asked -to be ' excused from commenting. But the in-, terviews did cover a wide geo graphical range and a variety of businesses. About two-thirds of those who replied felt the adminis tration was unfriendly to busi ness. Sample opinions: Marvin E. Purk, acting ex ecutive vice president of the Dayton, Ohio, Chamber of Commerce who is attending the meeting here: "When the showdown comes, Ihe admin istration feels labor ought to have what it seeks, but we seldom see the time when the needs of business are justi fied in the mind of the ad ministration. Germany, president, Lone Star Steel Co., Dallas, Tex.: "The record reveals that the attorney general's office has pursued a vigorous cam paign in several areas of busi ness and industrial activity. On the other hand we find no such action against organ ized labor or other sectors of the American economy. We have but to look at the stock market decline since the Pres ident brought on the fiasco in Nilsen Refuses File on Infante Salem - IUPII - Oregon Labor Commissioner Norman O. Nil sen has refused to supply the Legislative Interim Commit tee on Agriculture with the personnel file of Mark M. Infante. a In a letter to Cecil L. Ed wards, executive secretary of the committee, Nilsen said "It is not the policy of this agency to release personnel files or documents on employees or former employees to unauth orized persons." Edwards noted that the Oregon Civil Service Com mission "cooperatively turned over their dossier on this man to Ihe committee." The requests to the commis sion and to the State Labor Bureau for data on Infante's past employment, Edwards said, "in no way reflects an investigation." Edwards said it is "simply assembling information for a preliminary report being made at the direction of the committee chairman, State Sen. Loyd Key (D Milton Freewater)." It's simply an at tempt to buy off business . . . I think big steel made a mis take, but they didn't deserve to be called traitors ... I just don't see any signs of things improving." Issue Taken Sample opinions from the one-third who consider the ad ministration friendly: Thomas L. Phillips, execu tive vice president, Raytheon Co., Boston: "I certainly do not feel that the Kennedy Ad ministration is unfriendly, al though Raytheon has taken issue with at least one of its proposals. I refer to the pro visional revenue act of 1962 which would would make in come by a foreign subsidiary immediately taxable at the source. . To predict improve ment in the relationship be tween business and ' govern ment would presuppose that there is something lacking in the present relationship. The administration' must keep a balance between business and labor and it will probably be criticized severe- r ly by both parties many times in the future." A small minority of tha -businessmen interviewed de clined to take cither side of the issue, but urged closer co operation between the busi-.' ncss community and Washington.
