Tuesday or. dcrcd the usual quarterly dividend of 75 cents a share on common tcck, the rate that has been paid since March, 1957. 'The world's largest steel producer announced first quarter earnings of $55.8 mil lion or B5 cents a share com pared with $31. B million or 47 cents in the first period last year when earnings were ad vcrsely affected by the reces sion. " Speculation arose recently that big steel" would cue the dividend to save money for modernization - funds it had hoped to raise through an un successful attempt to boost prices two weeks ago. The company's first quar. tcr net compared unfavorably with the $1.97 a share earned in the first three months of 1960 and with the $1.86 share reported in the initial period of 1959. Burning Permits Needed After May 1 Central Point - Fire per mits will be required for all burning in the Central Point jural fire protection district beginning May 1. - Fire Chief L. C. Lisenbee, in a notice to patrons of the dis trict, said that each permit Jsite must be inspected one day prior to burning. Also, all turning barrels and inciner ators must be inspected by the ire department prior to issu ance of a permit.
